Genealogical and historical abstracts included in Volume II and III
are exclusively from the Watchman and Southron, a
weekly Sumter County, South Carolina newspaper.
The Sumter Watchman was established in April of 1850,
with the True Southern having been founded in 1866.
The two Sumter District newspapers were combined to become
The Watchman and Southern of Sumter, South Carolina.
As the forerunner and parent newspaper of The Item,
The Watchman and Southern covered local and state,
as well as national events. Local news mainly focused on
approximately the same coverage area as The Item,
the present day newspaper published in Sumter.

The Item is delivered daily to homes in Sumter, Clarendon, and Lee Counties.
