Water, Oil, and Blood

LDS Stuff » Water, Oil, and Blood

My brother Josh and I were talking one day about scriptural symbolism. In particular, we noticed that there are three liquids that seem to have special significance: water, oil, and blood. Since then, I have noticed a few patterns in the way these liquids are mentioned in the scriptures.

Oil = the Spirit
Every now and then we find "scripture keys," or verses that show two phrases that can, for many purposes, be interchanged to provide new insights. For example, Rev. 19:10 says "the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." Substituting one of those phrases for the other in other passages can be a helpful exercise. Alma 17:3 says that the sons of Mosiah "had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy." The key verse Rev. 19:10 lets us also read it as saying, "they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the [testimony of Jesus]," which teaches the truth that our testimony of the Savior comes through prayer and fasting.

I found another such scripture key in Acts 10:38. Heading
Liquid Baptism of ... Effect
water water keep the commandment
oil Holy Ghost justified
blood fire sanctified
3

Notes
All bolded emphasis in the quotes were added by me.
