Indenture Child Contract -- March 24, 1866

A Contract between Duncan McArn and his Former Slave Alvey Hamilton

This indenture made and entered into this 24th day of March AD 1866 by and between ALVEY HAMILTON a freedman late the property of DUNCAN MCARN of the first part and the said Duncan McArn of the second part witnesseth that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the fact that he is desirous that said party of the second part should have and hold as apprentice his son AARON HAMILTON and that his said son Aaron Hamilton shall have a permanent home hath and doth by then presents apprentice the said Aaron Hamilton aged seven years to the said party of the second party to have and hold said apprentice until he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years. And the said party of the second part doth covenant and agree to and with the said party of the first part to have said apprentice taught to read and write, to treat him humanely, to furnish him with sufficient food and clothing and medical attention until his said apprenticeship shall expire and that the said party of the second part will at the expiration of said apprenticeship deliver up this indenture to the said party of the first part. In testimony whereof we the parties hereto have set their hands and seals the day and year above written.
