PEACE POEM
by David Nixon, October 31, 2002

Osama, a zealot, he
Disdains Hussein as much as we.
One looks forward, one looks back,
Each one the other would attack.
Sadam, he is a doubtful threat.
Diplomacy is our best bet.
Unprovoked aggression would
Make us the bad guy, not the good.
And in reflecting who’s to blame,
Our past behavior is a shame.
Atrocities of long ago
In Crusades serve to make us foe.
The Turk’s Empire in modern times,
Divided by the victor’s lines,
Without regard in this affair
To needs and bonds of people there.
In Palestine we made a mess,
Then let it fester more or less,
For fifty years, we gave no aid
To victims of the mess we made.
Ruthless leaders we supported.
In corruption we consorted.
Did it cause we thought it paid.
Intolerance, it goes both ways.
Add to this the horror of war,
Trapped in conflict we abhor,
Treacherous in every sense,
For unintended consequence.
Seeing this, our obligation,
The course of action for our nation,
Resolve the deeds we can’t defend,
Or else the war can never end.
