The members of Coldplay met at College in London in 1996. The band came together when Chris and Jonny started playing guitar and writing songs together, Guy soon came along to add some bass. The completed lineup formed after Will decided to play drums for the band, despite the fact that he had never played drums before. The band took the name, Coldplay off Chris' flatmate, Tim and began to reherse as a four piece band in 1998.
Sensing something special in Coldplay's music, Chris' close friend Phil became the manager of the band and financed their first recording, Safey EP. After a gig in a Cuban Cafe at 'In the City' in Manchester in late 1998, Dan Keeling of Parlophone Records' A&R began to follow the band's progress. A following gig at The Falcon in Camden was witnessed by Simon Williams of N.M.E. also led the band to both a glowing review and a chance to record a single for Williams' Fierce Panda Label. Brothers and Sisters emerged in early 1999, and soon Coldplay was signed to Parlophone/EMI. The band's first release on Parlophone in the UK was The Blue Room EP in October 1999. The track 'Bigger Stronger' started picking up air play on Radio One. Coldplay also embarked on their first UK tour, co-headlining with Bellatrix.
Coldplay began 2000 with the NME Carling Premier Tour. In March of 2000, their first single Shiver entered the UK's Top 40 chart. Another UK tour followed, then Coldplay went into the studio to record thier debut album, Parachutes. Parachutes, the band's debut album was recorded in London and Liverpool, and was co-produced by Coldplay and Ken Nelson. The album was released in the UK in July 2000 and reached No.1. The album spawned many hit singles including Yellow, Trouble, Shiver and Don't Panic. Coldplay's much anticipated second album A Rush of Blood to the Head is set to hit stores on August 26 (UK) and August 27, 2002 (NA)

The band took home the "Best Alternative Album" award, beating out Tori Amos, Bjork, Fat Boy Slim and Radiohead.
