#desert

This is to (hopefully) help people find their way to #desert..or find their way back.

A few weeks ago, IRC reset all the channels and nicks, so everyone had to re-register, both their names and the channels..pain in the ass, but once done, then it's business as usual..

You may prefer to download PIRCH or just for Mac's, IRCle but I use mIRC and so that is what the rest of this page is about.

First thing is to have the program, for those just starting, when you d/l, you'll naturally get the latest version (6.03), so servers won't be a problem for you, but for some of us who have older versions, you might have trouble getting an xnet server.  If that's the case with you, you can go to the mIRC site and d/l their updated server.ini file. It's not very big, only about 34k, but it has a huge selection of servers, xnet included. Just replace the old server.ini in your C;\mirc folder with the new one.

For those who choose mIRC, cos that is what I know:- To connect to the server, (if you haven't already) make sure you have xnet chosen, there are virtually hundreds of different ones, but xnet is the only one that will take you to our #desert. You'll know you're in the right one, if you see a topic at the top of the page..it is often changed, so no point saying wot's up there, but if it's not 'our' #desert, the topic will be blank, and you'll have an @ in front of your name...if that's the case, then simply disconnect and reconnect using an xnet server.

Once connected, you'll have to register, if you're a past user, and have forgotten your password, it doesn't matter, because they have too, basically we are all starting from here as new users. So, first thing you do, is think of a password..when I am telling you what to type for registry, I will use **** for your password, you will type there wotever it is you've chosen for it..(I know, clear as mud eh?) You will type
/msg nickserv register **** (AND your email addy)

The email addy must go after the password because they will send you an authorization number that you'll need to do in order for the password to be accepted..it takes only a minute for that to get there, so check your mail, and just copy and paste the line they tell you to type, it will start with
/msg nickserv Auth (then the number they give you)

To paste in mIRC, you need only Crtl/V There will be a message after you've done this to say you are recognized. You may have to 'identify' once too, that tells nickserv that you are who you say you are..in that case, just type
/msg nickserv identify ****.

There is a 'bot' sorta thing that prevents you from always having to identify, it will do it for you automatically whenever you come into mIRC, for that, you go to your Options (which is on the top of your screen, somewhere, depending on the version you have..but usually the 2nd or 3rd in the upper left side)  You click on Options, then 'Perform'  In there, you will find an empty window, and above that, a place you click to put in a check mark. Click the check mark thingy, then in the window, type these two lines,
/msg nickserv identify ****
/msg nickserv set kill on
The second line prevents anyone from using your nick on mIRC, if someone chooses that one, nickserv will warn them to change or they will be disconnected.

This will at least get you started and into the chat room, any questions, feel free to write me and I'll do what I can to help.. kfergus@magma.ca
