My sweetheart...Sassy. Born with the ligaments in her front legs too short, Sassy has come a long way! She continues to improve daily and will eventually be able to get around as well as all of the others. Sassy was given to me by a local dairyman.
In this pic, you can see the improvement in her stance. When she first came to live here, she could only walk on the top of her hooves. Now she can walk on the sides of her hooves with her legs bowed outward. Her ankles will flex now, allowing her to put the bottom of her feet on the ground
Notice how her right front leg is turned outward. The ligaments between her knees and shoulders still need stretching a bit more before she will be able to walk normally. But, you should see her jump around and play! She's a trooper!
Sometimes things happen that we don't understand. In November 2002, I lost two of my girls. Sassy fell victim to lightning. I found her lying dead near a tree. The saddest part of it all was that her legs had straightened out and she was getting along well. Poor baby! Less than two weeks later, I found Belle down. One of the big girls had cause her to slip and fall a day earlier. I think she may have fractured or broken her hip. The vet came and did what she could for her, but there was no hope. I had the vet put her to sleep. On a happier note, I have added two new babies to my crew. Mooney and Snowball (my kids named them)were brought to Annie's Place in January 2004. They were 4 days old when they came to live with us.
