UP IN ARMS ABOUT ARAMARK
Florida prisoners going hungry!
Families have become increasingly alarmed about the weight loss and health problems their loved ones are suffering due to lack of decent food in Florida's prisons since Jeb Bush signed the contract with Aramark. This food service company has a history of complaints against them a mile long. Even guards agree - They fear for their safety when prisoners go hungry.

PRISONER PEN-FRIEND WEBSITES BANNED!
It has come to our attention that many of the prisons in Florida are not being provided proper footwear. Prisoners from various institutions are reporting holes in their shoes, ill-fitting shoes, and a total lack of shoes. Families have reported seeing the proof of this in some of the prison visiting rooms. We need 50 prisoners who need properly fitting shoes to sign onto a list we will present to the DOC, who has agreed to investigate the problem if even one prisoner gave his name. Well, we know there is safety in numbers.
AND ALWAYS, THERE'S THE CHILDREN...
- 63% of children, treated as juveniles, DO NOT re-offend.
- Over 50% of children put into the adult system DO re-offend.
- Transfers of juveniles into adult courts is EXPENSIVE.

NEW LIST OF FLORIDA DOC WARDENS
NOTE JANUARY 27, 2993: New Secretary of 'Corrections', "Jimmy" Crosby, has been making a lot of changes ever since the governor gave him the power to do so in early January 2003. This list is fast becoming outdated. When the dust settles, I'll revise it.

PLEASE...WRITE THE INMATES!
"You know - I can take the cardboard food, I can take being locked up and treated like a dog sometimes by the COs; I can take the rain leaking through the ceiling on my head, but till you started writing to me - I was the loneliest soul in the world and that was the hardest thing of all to take. Now - the leaking ceiling isn't so bad, the cardboard food tastes a little better, and I get to see the look on the CO's face when he hands me my mail and he sees SOMEBODY out there cares about me."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The Invisible Mailman The strangest thing happened today, I opened the envelope so very wide, The writing was so neat and so very clean, I need to hear sweet words, only from you. So, I'm writing you back, with love you can bet, I'm locked up, but only for now, ~Author Unknown~ |
The Prisoner
Innermost thoughts from behind bars
NOTE:
The people on this site and myself would hope that you will feel free to write anyone named. That is why we've included addresses. Florida does move prisoners around A LOT so you should always double check the DOC site for the current addresses. Contact from the outside is many times the only thing that stops some guards from taking illegal actions.
If you see a story that you want to know more about, or if you want to save a man from unnecessary and excessive force, if you want to raise the spirits or encourage him in his recovery; or if you just want professionalism from those paid to be the keepers of people in prison with public money, by all means,
Please do - adopt a prisoner.
I advise you to use simple common sense
when you make your decision to write to prisoners:
1. Don't send money you can't afford to give away.
2. Don't send money to a prisoner any faster than you would to any free world stranger.
3. If you are concerned by these sorts of things, double check any needy story from a prisoner just as you would in the free world.
4. Don't talk sex with a prisoner if you don't want to.
5. Rent a PO Box if you are uncomfortable with a prisoner having your address.
Face Facts!
There is no need for a
Prisoner PenFriend Ban.
You are much more in charge than the prisoner.
Take your own responsibility.
It's what is expected of a free adult citizen!

Living In Florida Prisons
Suggested Reading
on the drug war, the prisons, the medicine, and the betrayers.
Two million Americans now live in prison. Two million people whose families are being punished as if they, too, had committed a crime. About 70% of the inmates are non-violent; about a quarter of them are mentally ill upon sentencing; over 60% of them are offenders of the prohibition laws; up to an estimated 15-25% are innocent of their charges, and only about 3% of them are repeatedly vicious. (I wish I could say the same of their keepers.)
All, from the least to the greatest, even the peaceful pot smokers, are treated as a subhuman species who have done something unforgivable to people who demand forgiveness for themselves; ignored by people who say "inmates deserve anything they get"; mistreated by those paid to keep them safely and rehabilitate them.
But least we forget, as we ignore what the inmate suffers, we are also ignoring what is happening to those serving as their keepers and to the hearts of society. In many ways, we, too, are becoming just as 'criminal'!

NOTE:
This 'inside/outside the walls' project is a gamble, one that cannot be avoided: Either those who just don't know will be appalled and help make prisons the healing place they need to be for our own public safety; or, as the errant guards warn them, these inmates will be ignored or automatically labeled liars. "Who they gonna believe?" smugly asks the errant guard: "You or Me?" If our faith in our fellowman is misplaced, the unchecked guard retaliation could be unbearable for many of them.
The changes have already started: With 2 million people being mass warehoused in United State's prisons, there's too many people comparing notes. Already very few people are still denying the problems inside are immensely real: They just aren't sure yet how to fix the mess we've ignored for so long.
I have great faith in the goodness of man and know that real healing can only come when the painful truth emerges.

DISCLAIMER: Although I cannot guarantee the truth of each incident in these pages, I do guarantee that the big picture presented here is as accurate as I can possibly present it. Although the stories contained herein mainly come from prisoners, their accounts are backed up by copies of grievances, medical records, family testimony, lawyer contacts, witness statements, samples of the Loaf, water, prescription labels, burnt skin, etc. and at times the validation of the DOC's own personnel, some of whom have remained in contact to guide me and fill in whatever parts of the picture they could. These accounts belong to others. Therefore I can claim no ownership, authorship or credit, nor can I accept any responsibility for the contents. I, like Gary Waid, am simply the recorder who listens when no one else will and an amplifier for the voiceless.
TO THE READERS OF THIS WEBSITE:
I would like to make it clear to those reading these words that in no way should anyone interpret this site as trying to interfere with the operation of any institution, facility or agency of the U.S. Government or of any state of the United States. The information on these pages is not intended to disrupt the smooth, lawful running of prison facilities, but to force the true costs and damage of the incarceration of over 2 million people to be brought to light.
I have always adhered to the teachings of Gandhi and fully encourage non-violent, non-acceptance and open discussion of immoral incarceration and illegal prison conditions.
