The Fila Brasileiro is a large Brazilian dog. They are a part of the Mastiff family. Known for their outstanding courage, determination, and bravery are part of their characteristics. They are docile, loyal and obedient to their owners and family and extremely tolerant with children. "Faithfull as a Fila" is a Brazilian proverb. They are always looking for the company of their owners. Another of their characteristics is their "OJERIZA" toward strangers. ( Which is a Portuguese word meaning dislike, aversion, ill-will, grudge, spite. They shows a calm disposition, self-assurance, and self-confidence, not being disturbed by strange noises nor when facing a new environment. An unsurpassed guardian of property. By instinct they are also incline to hunt big game and herd cattle.) They love their family and tollerate a lot of abuse from the kids in the family. Its unbelieveable how gently they are with my children. A tug of the ear, may cause an eyebrow to lift or a huff of air from big lips laying against the floor. They are extreamly tollerable. Fila's make great family pets and are gentle, loving, loyal and extreamly protective. They will also bond with other pets in your home.
This also brings another valuable point. The Fila makes a absolutely wonderful gaurd of propery and person. Anyone wishing to own this breed must understand proper socialization is a must. As well as understanding the breeds natural inbred instincts. At a young age , between 3 to 5 months you will start to see the development of the pups temperment. They will become leary of strangers, large and small. Meaning even a child that is not part of your family is a stranger. A Fila WILL attack a stranger. The ultimate pride is to keep their family and property safe. There is no need to agression train or protection train this breed. The dog will only make up to people they feel that you trust unconditionally. Another reason strict obedience training is a must. Learning the behaviors of the fila and "knowing" your dog is the key. This breed is not for people with an active social life persay.
The Fila is NOT a breed for everyone. They require alot of love time and interaction with their family. Exercise is a must, at the risk of a whirl wind reaching the speeds of 35mph through your yard. They do need room to run, city apartment life is not an ideal situation for a Fila. A fenced yard with proper shelter for evenings outside is ideal. Although the breed can be extreamly lazy, dont be surpised if they refuse your offer for and evening walk, or "watch" you run around in an attept to play.
The Breed is available in several different colors. The varieties include brindles, fawns and black. The brindles are vary from a light shade stripe to a dark thick stripe uniquely placed. Therefore we label ours dark brindle / light brindle. Fawns come in varied colors also, ranging from a pale yellow, light gold, light brown, dark brown and reds. And the rare black. Black masks may or may not be present in brindles and fawns. White marking on the tips of the toes tail and chest are very typical. White socks are acceptable and when they come in pairs its quite nice.
The "gait " "camel pace" of a Fila is unique . They move very smoothly, twisting their whole body in a "S" motion when walking due to their typical pace, placement of the shoulders, and hind legs angulation. This breed has an enormous flexibility all over the body and its way of walking resembles the way big cats move. The pace which is a 2 beat lateral gait, in which the legs on each side move back and forth as a pair, causing a rolling or rocking motion in the dog's body. Structure and proportion have a direct influence on a dog's pace. This sort of action is sometimes called side wheeling.
