Gacy's Trial

On December 22 1978 Gacy confessed to killing dozens of boys in the Chicago area. His trial began on February 6, 1980 in Chicago, Illinois. When the poice began to question him about the murders he tried to plead insanity. He stated that he had multiple personality disorder and that there were four personalities. The first three had nothing to do with the murders, they were a business man, a political operator and a volunteer charity worker. However, during the trial he claimed he had one bad personality, Jack Hanley, who was reponsible for all the killings. Obviously his claim was false. He always tried to confuse the prosicutors by telling them that they would have to question Jack if they wanted any answers. Gacy was being represented by Sam L. Amirante, the prosecutor was William Kunkle and the judge was Louis B. Garippo. The jury was made up of 12 white jurors. Gacy was facing charges of multiple murder and sexual assault. His trial did not take long and he was sentenced on March 13,1980 to death by lethal injection. When sentenced he was sent to the Menard Correctional Center. After being on death row for 14 years, all his appeals were finally exhausted and it was time for his sentence to be carried out. In May 1994he transfered to Joliet state penitentiary, where he would wait to be executed. On May 9, 1994 Gacy recieved his last supper, which consisted of fried chicken, french fries, strawberry shortcake and soda. During his last night he did many phone interviews and kept claiming his innocence. Finally just after midnight on May 10, 1994 Gacy was put on a gurney and injected with a lethal amount of drugs.
