GHOSTBUSTERS STREET SHOW

The Ghostbusters Street Show was another live action show put on by the busters, except this time it took place outside.  More specifically, it was in front of the NY Public Library facade.  This show was setup to be more like watching the Ghostbusters out on a call, at least at first.  You see the Ghostbusters would come running down the street, with the Ecto-1 behind them.  After Ecto was parked alongside the foot of the Library, the busters got down to business.

Peter provided the introduction: "Apparently there's been a disturbance in the area, and of course the Ghostbusters are here to check things out to make sure everything's okay.  So I need everyone to just back up a little bit, give us plenty of room to work, because well...we're psyched!"  (I should point out now, that the guys who played GB's at this show were picked because of how similar they looked and acted.  It really helped contribute to the feeling that you were actually watching the Ghostbusters)  Ray then points out he's getting major readings from the PKE Meter, so they decide to sweep the area.  They split up, and run around and try to find the ghost.  Beetlejuice comes out, and acts like one of the audience, asking for a picture.  They pull a random person out of the crowd and all of them pose for a picture.  (Wish I could have been that person)

After the picture, the busters realize either the B-man or the photo person are the ghost.  You can guess who Beetlejuice blames, but the Boys in Grey usher the person from the audience away and prepare to shoot Beetlejuice.  When they try to fire, something goes wrong and none of the packs work.  Beetlejuice quips 'What did you guys forget to pay the Con Ed bill?'.  While the Ghostbusters yell at each other and try to figure out what's going on, Beetlejuice takes control of their minds.  "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" starts in the background, and lights from the background come on.  "I love this....heh heh.....Motown!! 1968!.....2-3-4"  The song immediately kicks in, and the Boys in Grey, under Beetlejuice's control are forced to dance to it.

The Ghost with the Most goes behind a pillar of the Library facade and pulls out a pink shash, and puts it around Winston for his big solo.  "Ladies and Gentleman....Winston...Zeddemore" followed by Winston lip synching to "I know, I know you must follow the sun"  Singing into the end of his proton gun, Winston walks around the whole area, and right by the crowd.  A little more song and dance goes on, until the Ghostbusters try to get to their trap which is on the other side of the stage.  As they make a run for it, Beetlejuice regains control and says "STOP!!!....Hammer Time!".  This causes the busters to dance to 'Can't Touch This', and move away from the trap.

"ONE MORE TIME!!!"  Beetlejuice yells, and back to their Motown song and dance they go.  The GB's then yell out for help from Slimer, who appears (a puppet)  in the window of the Ecto-1.  Slimer starts yelling out 'Beetlejuice', (just gotta say it 3 times remember?) so Beetleguese runs over to stop him.  He gets 'slimed' by the little spud which intereferes with the mind control, so the busters are free.  They chase him into the Library where they zap and trap him offstage.  Winston emerges victorious, with a smoking trap in hand, yelling "We got him!!!".

"We came, we saw, we nailed that little protoplasm's afterlife.  Now for all your ghostbusting needs, who ya gonna call?? "  The boys and the audience all yell out 'Ghostbusters!', as the theme song starts playing.  And that, was the end of the show.  The Ghostbusters stuck around for pics and autographs and hit the road once they were done.

My View:  When I saw this show as a kid, I loved it.  It's one thing to watch the Ghostbusters from behind a huge glass auditorium (the Spooktacular), but it's another to watch them come blazing down the streets of Universal with the Ecto-1.  Unfortunately, Universal did not keep this show around for long.  I saw it in April of '91 (still the opening year for USF), but when I got back in '93 it was gone.  Gone, but not forgotten...the idea of the Ghostbusters taking on Beetlejuice was resurrected in '02 for the Extreme Ghostbusters: The Great Frightway.  Once again, Ghostbusters cruised in with Ecto-1 and were forced to sing and dance by Beetlejuice.  Although that show had faaar more emphasis on the dancing, and less on busting Beetlejuice.
