If you don't have one already, get a multi-tester.  Any cheap brand will do, as long as it has the ability to test AC/DC voltage, milliohms, and up to 10 A (mine happens to have a tester for diodes and transistors also).  Another invaluable tool when testing frequencies is an oscilloscope, and seen in the picture is the frequency being pulled from the air!
