Summary


Search Engine:

Netscape- An enormous database of detailed websites that have been submitted to the individual engine. A search will result in a web site that fits a phrase or detail in the search.

AltaVista-A directory where websites are submitted and can be searched to find a site in that directory to find the site that is most closely related to the search.

Ask Jeeves- A search engine is a database of websites and a program used to search them. When a search is submitted, the search engine "sorts" through the websites for the word or phrase and then organizes them for the viewer in order of the most accuracy.

Excite- A group of websites organized by category in a logical order. These directories can be "searched" (will send out a keyword) to find sites relating to certain topics.

GoTo- A server that you submit your website to, so that it will be available when someone searches with that server.

Hotbot- Matches up keywords with websites contained in their own directory and displays them.

LookSmart-A large group of categorized websites.

Lycos-A company or group that keeps sites submitted to them and organizes them. Someone in the company/group's site can type in a keyphrase, which the search engine will match wth websites.

Google- Searches websites for specific keywords and matches them up.


Browser:

Netscape-A computer program used, in connection with the internet, to sort through the WWW for keywords and displays them.

AltaVista- A software program used to locate and dispay web pages.

Ask Jeeves-A software program designed to locate and display websites.

Excite-A program used to visit web pages.

GoTo- "Internet Browser interprets HTML, the programming language of the internet, into the words and graphics that you see when viewing a web page."

Hotbot-"A browser is a software program that lets you explore the World Wide Web to find text, graphics, sound, movies, games, chats and more."

LookSmart-". . . a program used to surf the web."

Lycos-"A software program designed to locate and display Web pages. Browsers are designed to read HTML.

Google- "Software used to view the Web, such as Netscape Navigator."


 Internet:

Netscape- A global network connecting millions of computers.

AltaVista-A large netwrok of connected computers.

Ask Jeeves- A global information system created by linked networks of computers.

 Excite-" Also referred to as the "Net". The collection of all the connected networks in the world. Specifically, the set of networks that communicate via TCP/IP"

 GoTo-"The vast collection of inter-connected networks that all use the TCP/IP protocols"

 Hotbot-". . millions of computers around the world connected to each other.

 LookSmart- "An interconnection among the computers of the world."

Lycos-"A global network connecting millions of computers, that all work together to share information."

 Google-". . . a worldwide connection of networks."


 The internet is what holds all the websites in the world- a collection of networks (or connected computers) that share information. Within the internet are several search engines- directories of web sites- that can be searched for a keyword and will display the results. A browser is a program used to look at web pages on the internet, and also in connection with seach engines, to find websites
