On October 16, 1936 on the campus of Butler University, the Ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. enlisted the help of their husbands and male friends. They were enlisted for one reason and one reason ONLY, as a means of protection.
The founders of Sigma Gamma Rho were teachers in the Indianapolis, Indiana school district. During this time in history, Indiana was known as “KLAN”diana. It was a very promonate Klu Klux Klan territory. Some women and children were lynched in the area. Sigma Gamma Rho enlisted their husbands and the local men to escort the women and children to various locations. Being that Butler University is a private university if the men would have been caught on campus without being a student they would have been arrested. Thus, the Ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. gave the men the name Sigma GAMMA Rhomeo so that they would not be arrested. Thus, beginning the ellioustrious fraternity we know today as The Fraternal Order of Classy Gentlemen: Sigma Rhomeo Inc.This organization soon grew and spread nationwide, with numerous chapters each assisting SGRho.
On March 24, 1980 at Prairie View A&M University, the Classy Gentlemen, now fully accepted nationally by Sigma Gamma Rho, was established by six young men of the Mother Chapter of Delta Alpha, and thus The Fraternal Order of the Classic Gentlemen of Sigma P-MEO was born. These six founding men are known as “The Elite's”. They sought to serve and protect with valor the Women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated, and never to bring shame to the name of Sigma or the fraternity. Together with Sigma Gamma Rho they pursued a better brotherhood/sisterhood and sought to offer services to the community and extend the hand of brotherhood to all undergrad students.
There are over 40 chapters of Rhomeo, and more are being established every year. These young men are challenged to “Prepare Today for Tomorrow's Success”. ...
