Iroquois and Kankakee County Churches

This is St. Anne Catholic Church in St. Anne, Illinois. This is the church where my mom was baptized . She and her brothers and sisters attended the convent school there until her mom died. Then when her dad died 2 years later 7 of the 10 kids were placed in the Home of the Friendless orphanage in Chicago. The baby was placed with an uncle. Mom at 17 was found a position as nanny/maid to a family in Kankakee, Illinois and her next oldest sister was placed in the convent in St. Anne to live with the nuns until she finished school.

Mom's family lived just a couple houses from this church on Grant Street. When she started first grade, the nuns were appalled that no one in her family spoke English. They sent her home to get her mom and then enrolled my mom and her next oldest sister. Their theory was that mom would need someone at home to speak English with and that the 2 of them could teach the rest of the family to speak English. Mom and her siblings were second generation Americans and the first in their family to need to learn English.

This is a beautiful church. The altar is very impressive. There is an area at the rear of the church that tells about the saint St. Anne and her power to perform miracles of healing.

The statue of St. Anne on the church property.

This is Zion Lutheran Church near Herscher, Illinois. My parents were members, when they lived in the Bonfield area of Kankakee County. My sister JoAnn was buried at the cemetery on the church property.
