I bought this game. I was dissapointed.
However, I'm not going to do a review on a game I can't
fairly judge. I'll explain.
While the not quite up to par for Dreamcast graphics are
nothing to write home about, the game looks ok, and everything
seems to be in place. But if you played the arcade version you
know that what made it stand out from the pack was the
interface. I'm referring to the twin arcade sticks that gave you
complete control over your mech as you blasted away at your
best friends mech on two different screens. VO:OT takes the one
screen you have at home and fills it with all sorts of crud
leaving you with only a quarter of a screen for each of you to
play on. While this might not bother some it bothered me.
And as for the interface... Unless you have the imported dual
arcade sticks the game is nearly unplayable. There are several
controller configurations to choose from but I couldn't find
any that I could use effectively. I remember how much I
enjoyed the original version in the arcade and I believe that
the Dreamcast sequel would hae fared even better if only I
had the arcade sticks. Therefore I'm not going to say wether
this game is one that you should or should not add to your library,
but be warned thatyou wont get the full (awesome) Virtual On
experience unless you have the right hardware. Give it a try
if you'd like, but don't buy it till you've played it. -JS
