Uriah's Lake

Part 5

"That's Uriah's Lake." Teresita said, as she
watched Adam stare out of the lodge window.

"What?'
Adam asked, as he turned away from the window.

"Uriah's Lake, they say he is still there."
Teresita said with a shrug.

"Still there?? What??"
Adam said, as he shook his head.

"You don't know the story?? We come out here
and you don't know anything about Uriah??"
Teresita looked at him with her eyes wide. "I
would really stay away from that lake if I were you."

Adam held up Rachels towel in front of him to show her.

"Rachel went swimming??" Teresita asks, as she takes
the towel from Adam. "Ohhhh boy, I guess I should tell
you whats out there, or really, What is supposedly out
there. I think maybe you should sit down...."

"No, I'd rather stand and watch the lake for signs
of my sister." Adam turned back to the lake and
watched. "Keep going, who's Uriah??"

Teresita started to bite her nails, and then sat on
her hands. She intended to break the nasty habbit.
"Uriah used to live here. He lived to a ripe age of 30.
He was a greedy greedy man. He never spent any
money, some say it's hidden here in the hills. He
started dabbling into black arts. Some say he
conjured up the Devil himself.. And then sold his
own soul for eternal life. He got eternal life, but not
the way he wanted. People say they see him in the
lake. People say they see his creations down there
in the lake...." Teresita stops and stares at Adam.

"Go on!!" Adam says and turns to Teresita.
"Do you think Uriah has her?"

"I don't know.." She responds and stands up, only
to sit back down. Her legs had grown weak. She
couldn't stand to think her cousin had been turned
into one of those creatures. "Oh Adam, I am so
sorry.."

"What are you talking about....creatures??"
Adam said, as he sat across from her.

She couldn't look at him. "He turned some of the
fish into creatures like himself. They are horrible
creatures Adam....Just horrible. One bite, can
turn you into one of them." She said, as she
looked at Adam finally.

"How do you know this?"
Adam asked, as she turned away again.

"It's only what I have heard."
She responded.

"Is there a cure??"
Adam said with a laugh.
This had to be a bad dream, he thought.

"I don't know, I don't think so. Once you are
bitten.. that's it. It's part of the deal with the Devil."
She finally stood and stared out at the lake." Look,
Adam, maybe she is out there and ok. We
shouldn't really worry." She said and
then wiped away a tear.

Adam stared at her, this had to be a joke.
"How long have you lived here? Have you
seen anything??" He asked, as he put the
towel around the back of his neck and held
on to each end.

"A few months maybe. Enough to hear a few different
stories. I stay away from the lake. It's dead out there,
nothing goes near it Adam. I know that for sure. And
sometimes I feel like I am being watched. Especially
during a good storm." She replied, and sighed.

He turned, and walked away.

"Where are you going?"
She asked, as he reached the door.

"She's out there, and I am going to find her."
Adam replied and shoved open the heavy door.

----------------------------

Rachel's tears were concealed by the waterfall
that fell over her. Uriah held her hand as best he
could, trying to console her. Rachel felt as if she
were being torn in to pieces. She felt as if she
could go mad at any second. She hated the thing
that was before her, but worst of all, she hated the
thing that she was becoming.
