We stood there and listened to the news. We had been at this
desert oasis for a day
or two, and were to be leaving the next day. Plans change though,
there was a sand
storm headed our way. Little did we know, it was right around the
corner. We gathered
some water from the ponds. Desi thought we should pack up and leave,
but the storm would
catch up to us. So we decided to stay, and face the storm.
There was little protection from the oncoming storm...
Quina opened the door of the stone gate that we were behind, and
much to our
dismay,we could see the storm rapidly aproaching. The gathering of
water came to
a halt as we scurried to find the best hiding place we could. Some of
us hoped in the
water holes, hoping the sand would not catch us there. Others of us
pushed themselves
into small holes in the cold stone wall.
All Quina could think of was the children.. He watched as the
huddled in a small pond,
as the sand overtook the small encampment. I pulled myself towards
him, and pushed his
shirt up over his face. We ran to the children, and tried to pull
them to safety. Rachel's lifeless
body fell through his weak arms. She had fallen beneath the water,
who know she couldn't swim?
Desi was in his car, I wasn't sure if he were alive or dead until
he looked up and
stared at us with dark eyes. He opened the car door for us to get
in.
Max cried as he held his sisters hand.
"Rachel, wake up!!" Max cried.
I looked out the window, watching the others huddle aganst the
storm.
Was I being selfish leaving them out there? Was there anything
more I could do to help them?
I started to open the door, but Desi yelled to close it. The storm
was getting
worse, and I could barely see my friends. I held my scream on the
inside, so not
to scare Max. His twin sister just died, that was enough to drive
anyone mad.
I think I fell asleep, the next thing I knew there was silence. Were
we all dead?
illy me, if I were dead, would I be thinking? I opened my eyes and
could see nothing.
It was dark, cold and hard to breathe. I began to choke with the
dusty air that had
entered the car.
A knock on the door and a loud voice shook me more awake!! YES, I
am in
here, I thought...get me out. The door opened, and sunlight filled
the car. I blinked
and was pulled roughly out of the car. I could hear sobbing as the
other bodies were
pulled from the car. I was the only one to survive...in the car. I
was too shocked to
cry. Max, Desi, Quina, and of course Rachel, were gone.
David whiped the dirt off my face, as Sophia forced me to drink
water. My life
was taken from me when all four of the people in that car died. How
could I go on?
Nothing would be the same....Desi would beat me if he knew how I
felt....
but he will never know.
We buried the dead, in the cars that no longer worked. If Max were
still alive,
e could joke it was another Mad Max movie. I shook my head of
those
thoughts, and tried to concentrate on the surroundings. Surely there
were
other people out there.
We could sit here and die...or head into the direction of the sun.
It would lead
us to somewhere, possibly even to death still. I made my thoughts
none to Sophia and David. I talked while I packed what little
stuff
we had brought.
I started to walk away, as they scrambled to follo. How
long would it be until we found civilization....How
long....
