CHAPTER II

Shadow ran through the emergency room as if she were in a dream. Everything
around her seemed to be moving in slow motion.  She had heard about the wreck
on her police scanner, but didn't realize it was her friends. That is, until
Chris had called her. She had driven to the hospital as fast as she could.

She entered the waiting room and found Chris lost
in a trance, biting his fingernails.

"Chris?" She asked, snapping him out of his trance.

He gave her a weary smile and stood up so she could have a seat in the
crowded waiting room.

"Have you heard anything yet?" Shadow asked, as he watched him start biting
his thumbnail.

"No."Chris said, and then walked away towards the nurses station. "Ma'am?"

"Sweetie, we will let you know when we find out anything. We are busy
tonight." The nurse said, and pat his hand.

Chris sighed and walked back to Shadow.

"Dwayne?" Shadow says, looking past Chris.

Dwayne had entered the room slowly on crutches. He looked at his friends, and
walked passed them and out the door.  Shadow jumped to her feet and followed,
with Chris close behind her.  Dwayne sat heavily on a cold stone bench, and
lay his crutches on the ground. Shadow sat next to him, and Chris stood in
front of Dwayne, hoping to hear some good news about his sister.

Dwayne sighed and pulled a small box out of his pocket. "It's broken." He
said, as he lifted up a ring that glittered in the light from the street
lamp.  "There's only half a diamond in there now. I was going to propose
tonight." A tear fell down his cheek.

"She's not dead is she?" Chris asks, starting to feel week in the knees.

"I don't know, I don't know anything." Dwayne said, as Shadow put an arm
around his shoulders.

"I'm sorry baby." Shadow says, as Dwayne hands her the ring. "She can't be
dead, we would have known already." She says, as tears start to fall down
her face too.

Christopher held out his hand to Shadow, and she handed him the ring. "The
people from the other car are fine. Can you believe that?  Rachel is probably
barely clinging to life, and those drunk bastards don't have a scratch on
them." Christopher said in anger.  He put the ring in his pocket and started
to walk away.

"Where are you going?" Shadow called after him.

He yelled back over his shoulder. " I have to see my sister!!"  He walked
back into the hospital leaving the other two consoling each other.

---------------------------

Jessica and Bryce lay intertwined in sleep. The baby stared at them, and
then at the unseen entity that was in the room. Sinata giggled as the side of
his crib slowly came down enough for him to crawl over. He fell to the floor
quietly, and crawled to the bed. He stared at Bryce for a few seconds and
then crawled away. The man had put some kind of invisible leash on him,
the baby thought.

Bryce was barely asleep when he heard the baby bed undo. He watched through
half open eyes as the baby watched whatever it was in the room. He watched as
the baby stared at him, as if willing him to wake up. He watched as the baby
crawled to the closet door. The baby turned to him and noticed he was awake.
The smile returned to the baby's lips like it had before, an almost evil
smile.

Bryce lay willing sleep to return, when it would not. The voices echoed
again, only this time the voices were coming from the baby.

----------------------------

Rachel lay in her comatose state and remembered everything from that night.
If only she could tell Dwayne what she saw.  She had tried, but it was hard
to even speak. Sargatanis is back, and she had to warn everyone. She
listened to a voice, and then someone in tears. Christopher, she thought?
She wished she could tell him she'd be OK.

She was tired, but afraid to fall asleep. What if she died?? And then
another thought came to her confused mind. What if she was already asleep??

------------------------------

Jessica woke up and felt the cold bed next to her. Just like Bryce, she
thought, love her and leave her. She pulled on her robe, and decided to feed
the baby. She guessed IT was hungry.  She started at the empty baby bed and
scratched her head. "Sinata?" She whispered.  She looked around the room.
"Sinata, come out where mommy can see you!"   She walked into the hall
yelling his name.

"What are you trying to do, wake the dead? " Bryce yelled from downstairs.

Jessica walked into the kitchen and hoped he had the baby.  "Have you seen
the baby?" Jessica asked, noticing her child wasn't with Bryce.

"He's around here somewhere. Little hands, little feet, they get into small
places. I wouldn't worry." Bryce said, as he forked egg into his mouth. "You
want some eggs??"

She stared at him with hate in her eyes. "NO DUMB ASS, help me find the
B.A.B.Y.!!"  She turned out of the room and ran back up the stairs.

Bryce knew where the baby went. He walked up to her room and walked to her
closet. He knew where to go, because the voices beckoned him there. Was he
afraid, yes? But being afraid was nothing, because the voices offered him
everything he ever wanted. "Little baby...." He said, as he opened the
closet door.

A gust of wind blew past him, ruffling the blanket on the bed. The baby sat
in dirt on the otherside.. The otherside of what, Bryce thought. Sinata
looked at him, smiled, and waved. Bryce stepped into the closet, and the
door slammed shut behind him.

------------------------

Rachel lay seeing Bryce step into darkness. She wanted to yell out for him
to turn back, don't follow the baby. She knew she should have stopped Jess
from having that baby. She knew the evil wasn't over yet, she could feel it
in her now achy bones.

Bryce could sense her, she knew that.  He stopped inches from the baby, and
looked to the sky as if seeing her somehow. She screamed for him in her mind.
She wondered how far the scream could travel. He turned back to the door,
but it was too late. Another force had already started to take control.
