One Note Samba Arrangement
by Earles L. McCaul

Here is my "Stan Getz-Intro" arrangement of One Note Samba. What makes it different is that the Intro chords are played as "palm-muted" four-note bass chords on strings 6,5,4,3 (and 6,4,3,2) to "mimic" the sound of a bass viola. However, they can be played three different ways:

1) "palm muted" for Bass viola sound (how I play it)
2) "arpeggio" for finger-picked Lead
3) "straight chords" for Rhythm

During intro bars one, two and four, the "pedal" note G, on string 3, is played "open" throughout and is allowed to ring and sustain. During the third bar, however, the "pedal" note C, on the string 2, although "fretted," is played in the same manner, ie: it is allowed to ring and sustain.

For Lead work, I normally play the A-chorus with descending bass lines and the B-chorus with alternating ascending / descending bass lines (for variety). But, for Rhythm (somebody else playing lead or singing), I play descending line chords for bars one, two and four, and in-place chords for bar three. The B-chorus is normally played ascending throughout, depending upon the lead / solo instrument.

For the Ending, instead of the normal chromatic descending chord progression, I will sometimes jump back to the Intro and play it through once, do a sudden stop, repeat the first two bars, and then suddenly stop as finale.
