Tai Chi Chuan is an ancient Chinese martial art which is believed to be
the oldest, originating before and leading to Kung Fu. Its origins are
credited to a Taoist priest, Chang San Feng, who lived during the Yuan
Dynasty (1279-1368).
Unlike some of the other martial arts, Tai Chi Chaun can
be practiced by virtually anyone, regardless of sex, age, or physical
condition. This is because it requires little effort to perform. Slow,
even, rhythmical movements are the distinctive feautures of its practice.
Relaxation, calm mind, and deep breathing are the key elements.
Scientific evidence suggests that ther are three basic therapuetic principles
behind the efectiveness of Tai Chi Chuan. These are: the restoration of
vitality, the storage of physical energy, and the massaging action of
the internal organs which is achieved through daiphragm breathing. This
therapeutic value is not only beneficial in treating ill health, but is
also quite effective as a preventitive measure. |
