Potential Story Ideas

At the beginning of the school year, students often have trouble coming up with "things" to write about during Writing Workshop. Although I spend quite a bit of time (at the beginning of the year) developing mini-lessons to help students generate writing topics, many students like this "handout" because it gives them something to fall back on. Here is what I encourage my students to write about.

Write about your:

weekend
family
friends
pets
favorite sports team, sports hero
favorite television show/movie
favorite television/movie star

Write about your:

neighborhood
earliest childhood memory
birthday
name

Write about your:

favorite book
favorite subject
favorite teacher

Write about what you want to be when you grow up.

Write story about your life that you could tell over and over.

Write about something you remember doing for the first time.

Write about something you remember doing for the last time.

Write about something you’re good at doing.

Write about something unusual you’ve seen or experienced.

Write about something you think everyone should know.

Write about the birth of a family member.

*Of course this is just a starter list. You can write about anything of interest to you during Writing Workshop.
