Some Pictures from my Scrapbook

I have been a geologist for  about 12 years. I started collecting rocks when I was a kid. My Dad used to take us to quarries to look for fossils. .  I still get to do a little geology every now and then at work, but I spend a lot of my time supervising and taking care of administrative details. On the weekends, however,  I still try get out and look for fossils and rocks. This is the heart of geology, and while many professional geologists like myself do not get much time to do the things that we went into this field for, it is great to see how many people are still interested in rocks, minerals, fossils, and the dynamics of the earth's systems.

When I talk about geology it is nice to hear how many people are  really interested. The popularity of this subject in the documentaries created for television stations like the Discovery Channel, and TLC, speaks for itself. I hope that even if the visitors to this web site do not take up geology as a profession that they do learn to enjoy it as a hobby. Because the Earth is a very big and diverse place. I guarantee that if you get out from behind your computer and get out in the world you will find something beautiful, amazing, and exciting. Understanding all the inner workings of this fantastic planet  makes the experiences all the more enjoyable.

I used to go up to Devils Lake in Wisconsin to go scuba diving and rock climbing. As I learned more about geology I came to understand much, much more about this little lake. The cliffs I would climb were made of quartzite which used to be sand, you could even see ripple marks in these rocks. The rocks in the area were folded as mountains were created. The cliffs were carved as the Wisconsin River cut through them, and finally a continental glacier came and piled rock at the end of the lake and rerouted the Wisconsin River.

So if I could stand in just that one spot, I would have seen, a tropical beach, a mountain range, a river with towering cliffs, and finally a massive glacier over a mile thick. By understanding  just a little geology you can in a sense travel through time. You can see not only all the awesome features of the earth as they now exist, but you can see the even more astounding events that have happened in the earth's past.
