Before You Steal, So, your thinking about getting a graphic, a poem, a story, a photograph or a design from a webpage. There sure is a lot to pick from out here; there is a veritable feast of useable ‘stuff’ on the internet. Much of it is free, yes FREE, and you can use it pretty much as you wish. Designers of web sites even make it easy for you with download features, and ‘click’ and ‘save’ options. We are the people that design these sites for your viewing pleasure. Some of us pay for domain names, some do not, and just about everyone pays to use the web on a monthly basis. We struggle to learn the HTML language, make mistakes, and study some more.We keep long hours, often making our families just a bit irritated because we enjoy making webpages. We spend alot of money for our computers, some of us require huge amounts of memory and speed. Our printers often cost more than the ‘over the counter’ ones, because we want to see our graphics at their best. We want to present to you, a webpage that is pleasing, entertaining, and a memorable stop on your travels throughout the web. It really pisses us off to have some no-talent ‘surfer’ rip-off our graphics, pictures or other copywritten material. We know that there are many ‘capture’ programs out there to help you in your quest to take what does not belong to you. Would you mind if I took that ugly lawn ornament from your front yard and put it in mine? Suppose I used a pickup truck that was made to carry heavy, ugly things; does that make it okay? Suppose I went into your picture albums, and took some of those ugly photographs, and sold them to some ugly magazine publisher? Would you get just a bit upset at the intrusion into your ‘stuff’? Suppose 10,000 people bought the magazine, would you want some royalty money? You bet you would! Stealing is stealing, no matter how you get it, or justify it in your teenie-weenie brain. In the privacy of your home, you can make decisions that will dramatically change the way the internet is ‘controlled’. If copyright infringement becomes a problem, the lawyers will step in, then the politicians, and we will all loose, as our freedom takes another ‘hit’. If you would like something, ask. If you are told ‘no’, say thank you anyway, and enjoy the website. If it is ‘free’, but with restrictions, obey them, and give credit to the creator. If you were creative, you would understand. Someday, you may be, miracles do happen, and you will also be pissed off when some jerk that can’t even delete their out of date e-mail steals from your website! Have a nice day.
