The three day trip
was precisely that, however, Nite learned to her dismay later that
it wasn't going to be a simple six to ten days away, including travel
time with them resurrecting Darius' mother in the time there. Once
at the mountain range, the slow and painful task of finding the
cave had begun, and the fact that the mountains were all snow covered
didn't help the search one little bit. At night, the two huddled
close near the fire, sharing the fire's warmth as well as body heat
as they ate their dinner while they talked. During the day, they
were required to use the strenuous activity of their search to keep
them warm.
And so, the
few days turned into a week, and then into two weeks, and then into
a month. Nite never complained, and Darius was thankful for that,
and aside from the odd wondering as to what Cartoarn was up to,
neither mentioned New Dunbouri on their stay. The two found things
relevant to what was going on to discuss between them, and when
they couldn't they simply basked in the fire and a comfortable silence.
And so, two
months later they agreed that if nothing was found that day they'd
go back and get more supplies and then come back. The day began
like any other, the resbrinn and the half avariel taking to the
air and flying in separate directions as they went searching for
the cave. They'd moved camp on several occasions to cover more ground
in the mountain range, and for the same reason they split up every
morning to search through the day.
The day was
truly like every other day for the past two months to Nite. It was
freezing cold, the wind was sharp, and she was having no luck in
finding the cave where Darius' mother was supposedly entombed. For
all her silence she was starting to doubt the cave was even here,
and at night she could see in Darius' eyes that he was starting
to feel the same. The trip wasn't a total loss though, they had
officially become an item, Darius' small outburst by the river,
strengthened by them sleeping next to each other for the past couple
months to share body warmth had done wonders for them.
They still hadn't
made love, she idly noted with a grin, Darius seemed far to set
in his ways for him to ever propose that. It was cute the lengths
to which he respected her, whether it was from how he was raised
or not, she knew she'd never be seen as anything less than his equal
in the relationship, and in a generally male dominated world that
was quite a blessing to have.
Her musings during the day were broken however when the sun which
was halfway through it's descent caught just right off one of the
mountains. There was something down there. The mountain must've
been right in between both their areas to search as she could see
Darius coming. Waving to him she twirled once in the air before
heading for what she'd seen.
True enough,
there was a cave there set into the mountain. The two flyers landed
gently on the ledge, stepping into the cave cautiously. It was dark
inside, but at the very least to the relief of both, it was warmer.
The cave went into the mountain for a good twenty yards before it
took a sharp left and went on for another ten yards before suddenly
widening out. They'd found the tomb.
The room was
well lit, surprising considering it was the tomb of a drow, and
the walls all along were carved in symbols of drow religion, and
engraved in an odd dialect of the drow language that Nite couldn't
make out. A large set of stairs descended in front of them a good
two hundred yards into the large tomb, the room was a marvel of
construction and it seemed almost too big to fit into the mountain.
At the far end of the large room, raised on an altar was a large
coffin, in the wall behind it were what appeared to be four doors,
all closed with the slabs slid down to block the tunnels. To the
left and right of the coffin were large pillars with their own symbols
engraved into them, and all around that altar were skeletons.
"Your mom
must've been pretty important Darius.." Nite breathed out as
she took in the room. It almost hummed with magic as they continued
to look around, as if the room came to life as soon as two living
beings entered it.
"Yeah,
I didn't think she was this important though..well..lets see."
Darius said as he went to step down, Nite's hand grabbing his shoulder
suddenly put a stop to that plan as he looked back at her.
"Look at
all the skeletons..it's probably trapped. Can you read what those
say?"
"No, too
dark..nothing except this one" Darius replied as his eyes focused
on one glyph, "danger".
"Lets go
back to camp then, we'll come back here in the morning and check
it out with torches and the gear." Nite suggested, she didn't
get any argument from Darius, and together the two flew back to
camp
At camp
Darius quickly assorted the supplies they would need for the next
day while Nite cooked dinner for the evening. The gear was neatly
stacked, divided into what he would bring and what Nite would bring,
and then packed into their back packs which were then set inside
the tent.
The two figures sat side-by-side eating some of the last stew they
could make. They had enough food left for two days, a day extra
for getting back to the nearest town for restocking, so they could
do their business tomorrow, and then get back to town.
"Nite,
remember your promise?" Darius asked about halfway through
their meal."
"Which
one?"
"That if
it got dangerous, you'd go home" he reminded her.
"Yeah,
what about it?"
"The sign
said danger, I don't want you to be hurt"
"You promised
you'd come with me though" Nite said, knowing very well what
he meant.
"I can't
go, I swore an oath. You didn't."
"I'm not
leaving Darius, so forget it" Nite shot right back, her tone
of voice saying she'd brook no arguments.
"Fine"
Darius responded, admitting defeat, "But I go through first
got it?"
Nite nodded reluctantly to the counter-demand to balance her staying
with him for now. Still, after all was said and done, both seemed
relieved that they'd be staying in the company of the other for
at least another day.
"Y'know
Darius, knowing drow and the craftsmanship, whoever built that room
probably put a lot of traps in there. I mean, did you see all those
skeletons?"
"Yeah,
I did. We'll have to be careful" Darius responded, not catching
the hint on where Nite was going with this.
"They're
probably really deadly too, good chance we might not make it out
of here
.but I'm staying!" Nite continued, the last part
added when she saw Darius about to ask her to go home again. Leaning
back a little she reached into the tent and grabbed something that
Darius couldn't see what. Apparently satisfied she had a good grip
on it she continued, "Do you think there's a chance we'll die?"
"Yes, that's
why I'm worried about you. But I wont' ask you to go" Darius
responded. Nite simply nodded, she knew what she was doing, what
her reason was was cliché, but apparently Darius didn't and
so it would work. Darius stayed oblivious until she breathed out
"Well then" and her lips met his as her arm fully brought
out the blanket from their tent. She managed to wrap it around the
two of them as she drew Darius to lie with her on the blanket by
the fire as they kissed
.Darius
put another log on the fire as he pulled his shirt back on. The
sun would be up soon, and he wished it would stay down forever.
The feeling was only strengthened when he looked back down at Nite,
sleeping soundly rolled up in the blanket. Neither of them had made
it inside the tent, and a glimpse of Nite's exposed naked thigh
drove the reminder home of just why they hadn't to Darius. Reaching
over, Darius fixed the blanket to properly cover Nite as she continued
to sleep. She looked absolutely beautiful in the dim light before
dawn.
As his hand
gently touched her cheek she stirred and woke, her eyes almost immediately
focusing on him, "morning already?" she asked sleepily.
He nodded, almost wishing he didn't have to be the one to announce
that morning was here. He grinned slightly as she sat right up,
apparently oblivious to her nakedness as she was still half asleep,
"I had the most wonderful dream
where are my clothes?"
she said, realizing why she was feeling a chill, that she wasn't
in the tent, and that it wasn't a dream all at the same time. A
small grin spread over her face "So it wasn't a dream.."
she said, her voice saying how glad she was of that. Still, there
was no time for much idle chit chat, and after a breakfast, as no
one wants to face death on an empty stomach, the grabbed their respective
packs and left for the cave
.The
cave was much easier to spot this morning, especially since they
knew where to look. Landing outside the two winged humanoids clasped
hands as they stepped towards the entrance. "Whatever happens,
I love you" Darius whispered as they slowly walked through
the cave to the tomb.
"And I you" Nite responded, leaning over she gave him
a gentle kiss "for luck" she explained. Still, as the
entered the tomb deep down she had the largest feeling of dread
that only one of them at most would be leaving the tomb.
