As
your vessel enters the cove, through the massive double gates designed
to entrap suspicious craft, you first note the long, high, rocky
breakwater stretching off to either side. It's obvious intent is
to provide protection to the cove itself from rough seas durring
bad weather. On closer examination, however, it's secondary function
as a defensive structure, becomes clear; hundreds of pointed, metal
shafts protrude from the rocks, like the back of a porcupine, as
well as much larger ones barely showing, at times, beneath the waters
surface. Any attempt at a landing by an enemy force would be treacherous,
at best.
As
you clear the gates, you observe the bustling activity of a busy
shipyard: incoming ships being guided either to the huge commercial
wharf to the left, or naval ships, to one of the three enormous
caverns hewn from the face of the cliff.
These
vessels fly the banner of the Brotherhood of the Rose's Naval Unit,
FoxFire Legion, a bright blue field, emblazoned with a styilized
tri-color flame of green, orange and yellow. Peering through the
flame is the outline of a fox's face and, growing upwards from the
"fire", a long stemmed red rose. From a long flagpole,
atop the cliff, a huge flag of the same design, flutters in the
light breeze.
From
your vantage point, as your vessel is guided to the commercial wharf,
you spot several defensive emplacements dotting the edge of the
cliff and to each side of the cove, as well. You can also observe
the tops of several buildings positioned around the top of the semi-circular
cliff and also behind the short, wide road running alongside the
wharf.
As
your ship is docked in a slip and tied up, you might ask one of
the many dockhands what all these buildings could be for. You are
informed they house the sailors of the Brotherhood's fleet, it's
Marine contingent, Adminsitrative offices, smithy, forges, kiln
and Training Hall. The speaker has an unusal note of pride in his
voice, as he tells you he was one of the Team, under then Sergeant
Grace Mendelhart, who designed and led the construction of, the
Training Hall. Do you know, he grins, it even has an enormous glass
dome on the roof for learning to navigate by stars!
In
an aside, he smugly mentions, the "sarge" is a General
now. And leads the Brotherhoods Army corp. You are further told,
that members of the FoxFire Legion came up with the overal design
of the shipyard and support facilities above the cliff. They were
led by then Sergeant Haltirith Dragondgrimn, under first, General
Airellefyr Starbreeze, then General Shaerl Willowstar, who also
worked extensively in the hewing out of the caverns themselves.
The
project, you are told, is a matter of intense pride for all who
contributed. As the worker scurries off, he calls out over his shoulder
that the commercial warehouses are across the road from you and
that you can do your business there as well as arrange transport
and directions to the City of Light, New Dunbouri.
