Haltirith Dragondgrimn ~ ClanWorldser : Part 1

He was born roughly five hundred years ago, ClanWorlds time, which, if one does the math, makes him a bit older in Krinn or Rhydin years: {{The ClanWorlds Realm has a standard year of 16 months, 4 longer than the Krinn/Rhydin Realms, in addition, each CW month is 5 weeks, a week is 9 days and a day is 36 hours. This makes for a year that is 720 days long. As the ClanWorlds were placed around their three suns by technological manipulation, the year, month, week, day timelines were precisely fixed. All 7 worlds are on the exact same calendar, by design.}} Thus, in Rhydin terms, Halt is somewhat "older" than his stated 500 years.

Young Halt was, by birth, what his people call a "Hybrid"; a child of three Clans, in his case, Human, Elf and Dragon. Unlike his parents, who were Cross-breeds only, Halt was born with certain abilities only Hybrids have; These will be covered later in this writing. At the age of 5, his parents, Haltirith Aerther, a Human/Elven crossbreed and Shiiree'ena Dragondgrimn, a human/dragon crossbreed, determined that their son, along with his younger siblings, should be raised, for a time, off-world, in order to widen their horizons beyond those of the ClanWorlds.

So, they Portaled to a Realm known as Greyhawk, where Haltirith the elder had holdings, a small town in fact, with the dubious name of "PopourriVille". The town was known as a haven for misfits of body and mind; Cross-breeds, Free-thinkers and social outcasts. PopourriVille had one overriding Tenet for residency; all who would dwell therein must serve Light, loyalty to Law or Chaos or Neutrality, wasn't required, therefore they had a very strange mix of alignments, but all served Light.

It was in this place, that Halt the younger first began his education and search for who he was to become. One Rule all CW children were required to adhere to, especially when Offworld, was "No Magic". Period. ClanWorlders view what other Realms call "Magic" as a perversion of the natural energies of the multiverse ... a methodology of "forcing" the multiverse to do what one wants, rather than working as an extension of it. In the case of "magic", certain "requirements" must be met in order for the practitioner to accomplish his/her goals; A "connection" to the forces of nature, such as by Feel, or sight, or in some cases taste or sound. Most "Mages' are able to connect on only one or two levels, with rare cases of High Mages who connect on three or even four. Next, the ability to effect manipulation and control of the forces they do sense and, lastly and most importantly, "Belief". In order for "spells", "incantations", "potions". "charms" and the like to work, belief on the part of the "caster" and the "subject" is absolutely necessary. And, the strength of an individuals belief has a direct impact on the "magic"'s effect. This also explains why a common charm made for an uneducated peasant, will often render the spell of even a high mage or sorcery useless ... often with devastating results for the mage. In the case of "magic", ignorance really is often bliss.

All of the previous goes a long way towards understanding why ClanWorldsers are immune to most magic; put simply... they just don't believe in it. This "unbelief" comes from several key things; All CW'ers are born completely connected on all Levels to natural Energy... at the most Elemental source. They see, feel, hear, taste, smell, touch and "sense" it, from birth; with an innate understanding of what these energies are. This does not, however, guarantee an ability to work with those energies, just a pure and simple knowledge of what they are.

Which brings us back to young Haltirith or, "Halt" as his parents called him, along with the rest of the Popourri community. Halt lived, learned, worked and played not only with other ClanWorlder children in Popourri, but also with those of families native to Greyhawk ... including several who were apprenticed to Mages and clerics. And this led to his earliest "troubles", as one might guess. With his inborn affinity and innate understanding of natural energies, he was a natural at "mage craft" and, like all youths also had a tendency to rebel against parental rules that seemed "unfair nonsense" to the youth. As Halt's parents had forbidden him to practice mage-craft and, had even gone so far as to garner promises from all the local Mages to not instruct there son, Halt did what all headstrong young people do; he studied his friends lessons behind the parental backs.

At first, the basic lessons were harmless ones; causing things to smell different, small illusions such as will-0-th'-wisps, throwing one's voice or other sounds. But, eventually, more intensive "spells" were taught to the young apprentices, then passed along to Halt; Magic Missile, Simple Transmutations, Levitation and the like. All of which would have been no big thing for the non-ClanWorldsers, but Halt, with his innate abilities, also lacked something else his friends did not; training and control of his stronger abilities.

This soon became evident when strange occurrences began happening around the town and is surrounding lands; freak storms which appeared, then vanished in heartbeats, scattered crop failures or, almost as bad explosive crop successes, roving Golems of Earth, Fire and Air, which caused damage to several farms and businesses. The final "straw" so to speak was the morning the town of Popourri awoke to discover that all the herds of animals had been turned into purple, living miniatures of their former selves and, every last building in town had been turned upside down and was now standing, intact, on it's roof. The town council called a meeting which included every last sentient being in the area. All the Mages and their apprentices were called to testify as to the bizarre occurrences, with dire consequences promised if the culprit or culprits were not held forth. Headstrong and stubborn though young Halt was, he had, nevertheless a well developed sense of Duty and Honor; stepping forth from the throng, he stopped the proceedings, turned towards his parents and the rest of the council and confessed his activities, much to his parents dismay. After showing the Mages what he'd been attempting and how he'd done it, they were able to correct his results, with only the occasional purple goat or cow to show for it years later.

Halt's parents were livid, to say the least, but contemplative as well; obviously their son required punishment, but also training and discipline. He'd shown impressive strength in several areas of natural energy which, coupled with his passion for weapons and knowledge of all kinds, could make him a valuable Servant of Light ... or a terror. After much "discussion", the decision was reached to return him to the ClanWorlds, there to be enrolled for the next fifty years in the ClanWorlds Academy. If any place or group of teachers could educate their son in discipline, thought and responsibility, it was there. And so, the second phase of Halt's life was begun. At this time, he was about 13 in CW years, his other body's began to affect their "pulls" on him as well; while he had spent time in all three bodies by his fifth year, the next ten or so years of a Hybrids life were usually spent in their humanoid body, due to the growth requirements of the other two bodies. As such, when his family moved to Greyhawk, his transitional abilities was "blocked" by the ClanWorlds physicians, to prevent "unfortunate accidents" from occurring. On his admittance to the Academy, this block was removed; the Circle of Elder Sages determined that, as with many Hybrids, the more things he had to deal with, the less likely he would be to get into mischief and, in this, they were correct.

Halt had always known he'd eventually study at the Academy ... most ClanWorldsers and all Hybrid ones did ... at least for a while, in Halt's case, as well as several new students each year, he was entering about five years earlier than normal and would be remaining for many years longer than most. As a Hybrid, his tuition was paid for completely by the ClanWorlds Counsel; this was because Hybrids had a great responsibility to the Kindred Clans and, as such, it was felt they should be given every possible opportunity to excel in whatever they chose. You see, Hybrids and Cross-breeds were forbidden permanent intimate relationships until they passed their one thousand year mark; due to their unique physiology, Hybrids and, to a lesser extent, Cross-breeds carried within themselves the genetics that were rebuilding the Clans after an ancient catastrophe had rendered all but the Human Clan, infertile.

But that is another story, for another time and place. Suffice to say, it was felt a debt was due these individuals that equaled their Duty to the Clans, so anything a Hybrid or Cross-breed desired to learn and gain experience in, was theirs for the asking. Rather than the fifty years he'd been "sentenced" to, Halt instead spent the next one hundred and fifty years undergoing Academy training including several periods of off-world expeditions designed to give practical knowledge in the things he'd learned at the Academy All of this was strictly supervised, with Mentors assigned for each course of study. While Halt had an insatiable curiosity and hunger to learn and he delved into virtually everything that struck his fancy, eventually, his talents and passions caused him to, finally, narrow his studies to certain fields and related areas, all of which he was required to maintain practice and study in equally; Battle Craft, Sage Craft, Science, Woods Craft, Zoology and Xenology. Battle Craft and Sage Craft came almost too easily for him, while Science, specifically Aerodynamics, Spatial Displacement and Portals and, Crystal Technology, required intensive practice in Discipline and self-control. In the fullness of time, he completed his entrance requirements, narrowed his fields and expanded his knowledge until, finally, he attained his first Challenge ... that of Ranger Training ... the first step of which was the requires year of "Silent Service", in which the Adept spent an entire year acting as a servant to all who were in need, and to the CW community as a whole for festivals and celebrations.
