Chapter 2

A while later, Kayleigh was by her locker getting the books she needed for her next class. Okay, math binder, calculator, okay, umm, as clear as the water fall, Kayleigh was trying to erase the little 'incident' backstage out of her mind. She still couldn’t figure out why she has stormed out of the cafeteria. Was it because of Eric? NO, he always said drama sucked. I never stormed out of the café before just cuz of that.

Sighing and trying to get herself together, Kayleigh shut her locker. She turned around and all she saw was the firm chest of someone in a black leather jacket. She knew who it was before even looking up. Kayleigh walked around the person and headed towards the math room.

"Kayleigh, wait."

"What." She snapped.

"What was that at lunch?"

"I don't know Kevin. Leave me alone." Kayleigh snapped before picking up her feet and walking again.

He grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her back.

"Kayleigh, look at me." He ordered. Kayleigh looked away avoiding his gaze.

"Kayleigh.." He began.

Kayleigh looked up, her eyes displayed a flash of anger which startled Kevin. He reluctantly let her go.

"Did I do something wrong?" He asked carefully. Kayleigh shook her head.

"Then why are you so pissed?" Kevin asked. When Kayleigh didn't answer, he pressed.

"Is it because of Christina?" He asked hesitantly.

"No."

"Then why?"

"I don't know! I said it before and I'll say it again. I DON'T, meaning, DO NOT know why okay? Just leave me alone!" She cried angrily. Kevin didn't know what to say. Speechless, he just stood there.

The bell suddenly rang and broke the dead silence.

"I gotta go." Kayleigh said quickly. "See you later."

Kevin said nothing as he watched his best friend walk away from him, obviously still upset. 'What did I do? I...'He didn't know how to go on.

Kayleigh sighed as she plopped herself on the sofa in her living room. Her body ached all over with fatigue and on top of that, she still had tons of homework to do.

She grabbed an apple and made her way upstairs to her room. The phone rang.

"Hello?" She asked holding the cordless with her shoulder and the side of her ear while laid out her stuff on her bed.

"Oh hey Megan...what? I can't, I've got too much homework. I can't do that, finals are coming up, I can't afford to...I know it's a Friday. Kevin's surprise birthday party's tomorrow, I can't do my homework then..and yeah, and I just don't want to do them Sunday..uh-huh...yeah, you could come for a sleep-over...and yeah, we NEED to actually plan out Kevin's birthday party..yeah..uh-huh..k, I'll see you around 9 then. Later." Kayleigh hung up the phone and hurried with her homework.

4 hours later, the doorbell rang.

"Coming!" Kayleigh cried from upstairs.

"Hey," She said breathlessly as she opened the door.

"Hey, where are your parents?" Megan asked as she stepped in.

"Out for the night."

"The night?" Megan asked, sounding surprised.

"Yeah, didn't I tell you?"

"No..."

"It's their 20th wedding anniversary." Kayleigh explained.

"Oh! Okay then."

The two made their way upstairs but not stopping at the kitchen for some snacks first. Megan popped open a bag of potato chips and the two sat cross-legged on the carpeted floor.

"So have you finished all your homework?" Asked Megan.

"Almost." Kayleigh replied not looking up from her desk as she scrambled for a few final touches on her bristle display board for science. "I'll be done in just a sec." She said quickly.

"No prob." Megan replied as she walked towards Kayley's window.

"Which house is Kevin's again?" She asked casually.

"The one down the street with the big white porch that has that little black fence around the front yard." Kayleigh replied as if she had it memorized, still not looking up.

"Hmm..." Megan began.

"Done!" Kayleigh cried triumphantly. She turned around and rolled her eyes at Megan.

"Megs..don't start."

"What?" Megan asked innocently.

"Don't start with the Kevin crap." Kayleigh reminded her.

"I'm not!" Megan cried.

"Then what's with the look?"

"What look?"

"Ah forget it." Kayleigh gave up.

"So what are we going to do about Kevin's surprise party?" Kayleigh asked as Megan sat back down again, across from her cross-legged.

"I don't know. But I thought you were pissed at him." Megan commented.

"I am."

"Then why the party?"

"One, because it's his birthday. Two, he's one of my best friends."

"Okay fine. But seriously, do you really think of Kevin as just one of your best friends and nothing more?" Megan asked. Kayleigh sighed.

"Megs, can we NOT discuss my so-called love life right now and get the party planned out so that when tomorrow afternoon comes it doesn't look like we just scrambled around the last minute for his surprise party?" Kayleigh pleaded. Megan nodded and decided to let the subject slide just for now.

2 hours later, all were planned except for a few minor details.

"Yeah, we could do that and then have the cake wheeled out." Kayleigh commented.

"Hmm...we could do that..yeah let's do that. It sounds good." Megan replied.

"Oh my God, you already called the restaurant and reserved seats right?" Kayleigh suddenly remembered.

Megan nodded. "Yeah, it's all taken care of." Kayleigh let out a sigh of relief.

"Calm down Kay, you're getting all stressed out over this." Megan noted.

"Well, it's the big EIGHTEEN. Ya know?"

"Yeah, like oh my Gawd!" Megan exclaimed with mocking sarcasm.

"Oh shush!" Kayleigh scolded Megan laughing.

"So.." Emma started, a sly grin forming on her face.

"Oh boy..here it comes.." Kayleigh said rolling her eyes.

"No seriously though Kay, what was that at lunch?" Megan asked. Kayleigh looked away, her eyes staring past Megan and out of the window.

"I don't know Megan. I feel so bad though. I mean Eric didn't do anything out of the ordinary to piss me off and Kevin was just..just..THERE. Why was I so upset, I really don't know." Kayleigh admitted. Should I tell her what happened in drama class with Kevin? Should I? Kayleigh wondered to herself.

"You should have seen him man, I've never seen Kevin like that." Megan began, oblivious to the fact that Kayleigh wasn't even listening. "I mean he just..he just stood there and looked stunned when you stormed outta there. I couldn't believe you had done that. I've never seen YOU so upset either." Maybe I should, heck she's my bestfriend! "Emma, there's something you should know that might give you an idea or a clue as to why I was so upset." Venus told her friend. Emma waited patiently. "Well, after Mrs. Laforet said we were done for the day, I bumped into Kevin on my way down the balcony." "Yeah? Did something happen? Oh my God, you guys didn't…" "No!" Venus said quickly. "Damn, I was kinda hoping you guys did." Emma admitted smiling devilishly. Venus threw a pillow at her for saying that. "Hey! It was the truth!" Emma protested. Venus laughed lightly and went on explaining her story. "Anyway, he helped me getting down the balcony and well, we almost kissed." "But you didn't." "No we didn't. Some guy yelled out before we could." Venus explained. "And that's why you were pissed off at Kevin at lunch? For trying to kiss you?" Emma asked in disbelief. "Well one, I wasn't pissed off at Kevin, at least I don't think so. And two, he wasn't trying to kiss me. It just kinda happened. We both…" Venus trailed off not sure how to explain herself. "Tried to kiss each other?" Emma suggested. "You could say that…" "Ah ha! So I was right all along! You DO like Kevin!" Emma said proudly. "I do not!" Venus replied instinctively. "Then why did you try to kiss the guy?" That question took Venus by surprise. She never asked herself that. "I..I…. don't know." Venus admitted quietly. "Ah ha! There's your proof. You don't want to admit it. You don't want to admit that you like the guy!" Emma told Venus. "Well, that's cuz I don't like the guy!" Venus replied defensively. "On come on! We both know that's bull." "It's not! It's the truth!" Venus countered. "Fine, look me in the eye and tell me you don't like Kevin." "I, don't like Kevin." Venus said with ease starring straight at Emma. "Okay, just cuz that didn't work doesn't me you aren't lying!" Emma cried. Venus laughed. "Test me again when you can think of a way." She said before leaving the room to get a new can of pop from the kitchen. When Venus came back into the room, Emma put her little plan into work. "You know what Kevin told me after you left?" She asked Venus. "No what?" "That he was going to ask out Christina." Emma replied. Venus froze. I did NOT just hear that. She thought. "Oh really? That's cool." Venus lied trying to remain calm. Why would he want to go out with HER? Doesn't he know that she plays all the guys? She wondered. "You're actually fine with that?" Emma questioned with widened eyes. "Why wouldn't I be? I mean if he likes her, then him asking her out isn't out of the question. I mean it's HIS life." Venus commented as casually as possible. Yeah, sure you don't care. She thought to herself. Emma looked at Venus uncertainly. "Do you have any clue what you're saying V?" She asked. "Yes of course." "You're actually HAPPY that YOUR Kevin is asking out Christina?" Emma asked. "MY Kevin? Where did you get that?" "Well, I figured…forget it. But you do admit that you don't like Christina, am I right?" Emma prodded. "Yes you're right but that's simply MY personal opinion. It doesn't effect anything." Venus told Emma. Oh brother. Emma thought to herself. It as going to be harder than she expected. Deciding to change the subject, Emma spoke up. "So who's coming to the party?" "Umm, Eric, Kevin's 3 gay-ass friends, " Venus replied. "You mean that guy AJ with the weird hair, Howie and that blonde kid?" Emma questioned. "Yeah, and then Vince, Alex and Robbie from mine and Kevin's English class, hmm, who else.." Venus tried to remember. "Anotonia, Agatha, and Julie." Emma reminded Venus. "Oh yeah, Julie from art. The one who's crazy about Eric" "Yeah." "What are we, setting people up here?" Venus asked. "Well, not exactly, it's only Eric and Julie, you and Kevin." Emma replied. "Me and Kevin? Oh no…not again…" Venus groaned. Emma laughed. "So that's all we've invited?" Asked Venus. Emma didn't reply, she seemed to be deep in her thoughts. "Hmm? Uh yeah..but I invited Christina too." She admitted guiltily. Venus stared at Emma in disbelief. She couldn't help but feel a bit upset that Emma hadn't informed her about inviting Christina before hand. "I know you don't like her but I was thinking about Kevin." Emma said quickly noticing Venus tensing up. "Oh that's alright." Venus lied. "It's his birthday. I'm pretty sure he'd want her to be there since he likes her and all." Venus reasoned more to herself than to Emma. But do I want her here? "So you're okay with it?" Emma asked uncertainly. "Yeah, no prob. Why wouldn't I be okay with it?" Venus asked. Emma shrugged. "Yeah, I thought so. Come on, it's getting late. We have a big day ahead us tomorrow." Venus commented enthusiastically.
