After appling your ...leaves, moss, shells, etc in the joint compound you need to wait till the mud is ALMOST completly dry before you remove your fossil material. You don't want any give in the compound while you are pulling your leaves, etc out. There is no way to give a exact time. After removing your material allow the compound to dry overnight and then lightly sand, prime and paint with either a final coat of paint or a basecoat for a faux or glaze/stain finish.
