Just Dance With Me
For Megan...
Boys suck, Nick rules
Megan mumbled obscenities as she walked through the door of Jive Records. It was Valentine's Day and she was NOT in the mood for any type of lovey dovey, I'm-so-happy crap. Her and her boyfriend had gotten into a huge argument the night before and he started packing up his stuff. When she woke up in the morning, he was gone. He left a note on the kitchen counter that read something like "Megan- Have a nice Valentine's Day. I'll be back to pick up my stuff later. Bye." Not the nicest note one would hope for on the day of love from someone that she thought loved her.
"Hey guys," she huffed, walking into the recording studio. She threw her keys and purse on the counter and turned so her face was towards the wall. She covered her face and bit her lip, trying to restrain herself from crying and making a scene.
"You okay?" asked one of the men in the room. She nodded her head and told herself to calm down. Finally, she regained control and turned around to see the Backstreet Boys sitting there. She'd helped them produce some songs before, but only once and that was nearly two years. She doubted any of them even remembered her. Kevin, with his long black hair and matching facial hair stood up and introduced himself and the other four men. She shook each of their hands and introduced herself.
"I'm sorry you guys had to record on Valentine's Day. That bites," she said as she warmed up the sound boards.
"We get out earlier then usual today. We're sorry you had to come in on Valentine's Day," said Brian, swinging his swivel chair back and forth.
"It's not like I had anything better to do," she mumbled.
"I hear that one." She looked to her side and saw the tall blonde kid named Nick sitting on the floor with his back up against the wall. His arms rested on his knees that were up in front of him and he seemed very interested in the carpeting.
"Okay, we're all ready to go. Who's going first?" Nick stayed where he was and Brian made a beeline for the studio, cutting Kevin off.
"I got places to be, man. My wife needs me."
"Yeah, and my wife doesn't need me," Kevin said, sarcastically. Brian stuck his tongue out at him and Kevin flicked him off. She got him going, then sat down in the chair and looked over at Nick who was staring up at her.
"You okay?" she asked, quietly. He shrugged his shoulders and looked back down at the carpet. The other three guys were all talking quietly so she rolled her chair closer to him and bent down to his level. "I know how you feel. If it brightens up your day at all, my boyfriend left me last night. He said he wasn't ready for the kind of commitment that I needed. Let me tell you, I've never said a damn thing about any kind of commitment. I'm satisfied with just living with him. So, long story short I woke up this morning and he was already gone." Nick was looking back up at her now, listening to every word that came out of her mouth.
"Yeah, my girlfriend left me this morning before I got in the car to come here. She said she was sick of me always having to work. It's not like she wasn't used to it, though. We'd been together for like two years and now she can't deal with my job? It's not like I got some new profession, I've been doing this for about eight years now!" said Nick dropping his head again.
"Do they know?" Megan asked, gesturing over her shoulder at the other people in the room. Nick shook his head.
"No, they're all happy with their little girlfriends and their little wives. I didn't want to destroy the Valentine mood. I hate this stupid day. Dumb ass cupid shit."
"I know how you feel man," she said, placing a hand on his shoulder. Just then, the song ended and she wheeled herself back over to the boards and stopped recording. Brian walked back into the room and AJ, Howie and Kevin all crowded around to hear the playback.
"Don't you want to hear it, Nick?" asked Howie. Nick simply shook his head.
"I can hear it from here," he said, but no one heard him because the playback was already beaming through the speakers. Megan slipped out from the crowd and walked back over to Nick, sitting down next to him.
"You know, it's okay to cry," she said softly. He nodded his head, and she felt somewhat hypocritical. She wanted to change her statement a little, but he replied before she could.
"Yeah, I know. I just don't like to do it in front of people."
"I just want to sit here and bitch and moan with you about the day and the purpose of it, all day long." Neither party said anything until AJ came over and said Kevin was ready to record. She stood up and walked back over to the sound boards and got Kevin going. The remaining three members (minus Nick) were done soon and all plowed out of there as soon as they were done. She looked at Nick who was now sitting in a chair next to her. Howie had just left and Nick was the only remaining Backstreet Boy in the building. "You're turn," she said hitting his leg. He stood up and dragged himself into the booth, placing the headphones over his ears. The song they were recording was a sappy love song and halfway through, he ripped the headphones off his ears and walked back into the studio.
"I can't do this," he grumbled, flopping back down in the chair. "It sounded so crappy. I just can't get into the love-song mood. Do we have any tracks where I'm like 'I fucking hate you, you suck ass, I hope you rot in hell?' Because if so, I think I could record those today." She laughed and shook her head.
"No, I don't think there's any of that on your album. Maybe we could go see if Limp Bizkit is in need of a Backstreet Boy cameo on their record." He slightly smiled and let out a light chuckle. "Holy hell I made you smile."
"That you did." Nick looked down then back up at Megan. "Look, I know I barely know you and you barely know me, but do you want to go out to dinner with me tonight? I made reservations at Spago for my ex-girlfriend and I but since she's obviously not going to be there, would you like to come? I mean, normally people wait months, sometimes even years to get into this place, so I mean...Well, if you don't want to, that's okay too. I'm babbling. Let me be quite." She laughed lightly and nodded her head.
"Sure, I'll go. It's not like I have any sort of plans, anyhow. Besides, it'll be fun starting rumors that you've got a new girlfriend for all your little teenybopper fans," she said grinning. She gave him her address and the two walked out of the building side-by-side.
"Wait, I have something. Cause I mean, this is really last minute and I'm not so sure you'll be able to find a dress in such a short amount of time." He paused and looked her up and down. "You look about the same size as Mandy." He grabbed her hand and pulled her towards his dark green Dodge Durango. He opened the back and pulled out a long box. "Here ya go." Megan opened it and looked inside.
"Holy crap!" she said pulling it out and looking at it. It was long, black, and very classy looking. She could tell he'd spent a pretty penny on that piece of fabric. "Your girlfriend broke up with you? Man, she's gotta be crazy! If my man bought me expensive ass gifts like this, I'd hold on with both claws!" she said laughing. Nick closed the box back up and handed it to her and shut the back door.
"If it doesn't fit, oh well, we'll just do something else." She nodded and looked down at the box.
"I don't know what to say. I mean, I know you didn't buy it for me, but still you should take it back rather then give it to some stranger." He shook his head.
"Nah, it took me like four hours trying to find that thing...someone's gonna wear it!" he said smiling. "Anyway, I'll see you tonight." She nodded and hugged him quickly, then walked off to her car, clutching the box. She couldn't believe the total 180 at had happened to her mood. She'd been so angry and revengeful, but now she wanted to call everyone she knew and tell them about what he'd done for her already. That night, around 9 o'clock, the doorbell rang.
"Who is it?" she asked, pushing her foot into a black pump. Nick said his name and she quickly opened the door. He was holding a dozen red roses and her breath caught in her throat as she looked at him. His tuxedo was a far cry from his jeans and sweatshirt with a backwards hat that he'd been wearing earlier that day. He handed her the roses and she took them, smiling. She smelled them, then invited him in. He stepped in and looked around as she hunted for a vase. He saw a few empty places around the living room where some of her boyfriends stuff had been and it made him think of his own misery, but only for a few seconds. She walked back in the room and it was his turn to fight for breath.
"You look...wow," he said looking her up and down. "I knew that dress was perfect. I don't think it ever would have fit Mandy the way it fits you." She blushed and he smiled, putting his arm out for her to take. She took it and he led her out of her house. Once outside, she saw a black stretch limo parked on the street.
"Don't even tell me..." she said as he led her to the gigantic land monster of a car. The driver opened the door and helped her in. "This is freaking crazy, Nick!" she said as he climbed in. "Whoa, is that a VCR? My dear Lord it's a VCR!"
"And we have Surround Sound...not to mention a DVD player."
"Holy mother of...This isn't yours is it?"
"Mine? Hell no! You think I own a limo? No way man! I like to be at least somewhat in touch with reality. If I let someone drive me around all the time, I'd get the biggest ego just sitting in the back chatting on my cell." The two laughed and joked around the rest of the ride to Spago. Once there, the limo driver got out and ran around to the side to help them out, but Megan had already flung the door open and had one foot on the pavement.
"Oh...sorry," she said sheepishly as the guy gave her a disturbed look. Nick took her hand and the two walked into the restaurant and were seated immediately. After dinner, they climbed back into the limo to head back home, Megan assumed.
"Thank you so much for dinner again, Nick," she said for the millionth time. It was just that she'd never been so pampered in her life. She felt like royalty.
"Hey, the night's not over yet!" he said smiling. He put his arm on the seat behind her and she grinned, looking out the window at the passing scenery. "Oh, and you're welcome...AGAIN!" She looked over at him and hit him lightly in the arm. He chuckled lightly. Finally, the made it to their destination and the limo driver ran around the side once again. This time, Megan remembered not to open the door.
"Got it right that time," she said softly to Nick as he led her down the boardwalk.
"You should probably take your shoes off," he looked back at the limo, then leaned down and slipped her shoes off her feet then kicked his own off and peeled his socks off. "We can leave them here," he said rolling up his pants. "I doubt there's a real mad rush for the beach tonight." He placed their shoes side-by-side on the boardwalk, then stepped off and helped her down onto the sand.
"Can I ask you a question? Why are we at the beach in the middle of the night?"
"I don't know. Just an impulse. I love the beach and I wanted to share it with you."
"Oh...okay," she said smiling. They held hands as they walked together down the beach until reaching a spot that he felt suitable.
"Do you want to dance?" he asked and stopped walking. She looked at him like he was insane and looked around her.
"Nick, we're on a beach in the middle of night with no music. I'm beginning to think you're clinically insane or something."
"We don't need music. Just dance with me," he said wrapping his arms around her waist. She leaned into him and wrapped her arms around his neck. He softly hummed as they swayed back and forth. They continued dancing until the break of dawn. Then, they sat comfortably together and watched the sunrise, neither of them knowing nor caring if they'd ever be together again. They had that night and that's what they both clung to forever. They were married two years later on that very spot on the beach.
