Where working is a pleasure? I'd like to know where they got that one from. Work at Publix is insanity. So is shopping, so "where shopping is a pleasure" is also an inaccurate slogan.
For those of you reading this who have never heard of Publix, I envy you. Publix is a grocery supermarket. I must admit the food quality is quite good (though I'd never give them the satisfaction of showing this by buying from them), but working there is far from good.
Where shall I begin? Well, to start, I don't know about Publixes in other areas, but the one I work for in Palm Coast, FL (store #77) sucks. I guess I'll start with the management. (By the way, if any managers are reading this, (Kramer, Pyle, etc. you know who you are!) tough beans. Go ahead and fire me for writing this.)
Anyway, I'll start with Mr. Dugan, who, thankfully is no longer with "us". Dugan was one of those types that was always breathing down your neck and nitpicking the slightest little details of everything. (Phil, you missed that dust particle back there, and by the way, your shoes are the wrong shade of black). Dugan was definitely my least favorite.
Next comes "Cosmo" Kramer. I don't have much to say about him. I never had to deal with him much until Dugan left. He's also kinda new, replacing Archer, who moved. Archer was cool, but then we got Kramer, who I'm now seeing is just as bad as Dugan.
I thought Corrigan was cool, but now it seems he's always getting after me for not shaving (even when I did shave). He told me one time to buy (from Publix) a razer and go shave. Funny. They don't pay me enough to afford a razer. Anyway, I was broke, so I had to take an early break to run home and shave, meaning I didn't eat that day.
Enough about the managers. Let me move on to the job itself. I'll start with the customers. Palm Coast is a big retirement community for the most part (5 golf courses in the town! with a population of only 30g). My friend Jay calls it God's waiting room. Publix opens at 7 a.m. At 6:30 there's a mile long line outside the doors waiting for the store to open. Then they complain about everything wrong with the bagging. And, of course, when Publix closes at ten, we still have to wait about a half hour each night for the last of the customers to leave.
Now, on to the parking lot. All of Palm Coast is flat except for the Publix parking lot. Hills galore that I have to push shopping carts through to bring them into the store. And on top of that, no one knows how to drive here, so I must dodge cars on top of that.
And then there's that darn no tipping policy. As if we get paid enough. We're not allowed to accept tips when carrying out orders. Give me a break! I'm a struggling college student!
There are certain cashiers that I can't stand and try not to bag for when I can avoid it, but I won't get into that.
Publix - where working is a pain!
