Sleepless Night

Hot and humid
Late at night
In my dad's apartment in Miami
On the corner of the complex
I push the crickety door open
And quietly step outside
It's not completely dark
Though it's nearing one
Stars are blinded
By the city lights
Stray cats prowl the alleys
Sitting on the concrete sidewalk
Next to those noisy stairs
I stare at the orange tree
On the other side of the
Chain link fence
Noises of the night fill my young ears
Cars passing by
People talking loudly
Dogs barking
This late at night
All seems unnatural
My 7-year-old mind
Is filled with curiousity
Of the night world
My sleepless night
Introduces me to nighttime
For I never really knew it
Before.
