Reflections Of The Future - Part 1

Turok misted into a dungeon-like room in the basement of his fortress. He smiled evilly at the figure huddled on the floor, a figure that had once been so beautifully graceful, so powerfully stubborn. Now that it was nothing more than a shell of what it once had been, victory would soon be his.

Maeve looked up from her position on the floor. She had been in this tiny cell for almost two years now, but she always managed to find something new every time she looked at the floor. New pools of blood, new rats, new insects - not the sort of thing that someone would usually get excited over, but for Maeve, it meant her next meal if she could catch the elusive little creatures. They were the cleanest edible thing that she had available, since Turok and Rumina only sent to her cell what had been laying out for days or was unfit for even their dogs to eat.

"Get up, peasant witch!" Turok ordered. Maeve didn't move. "I said 'get up'!!" The merciless tormentor took a whip from seemingly nowhere and brought it down on Maeve's back, which was already exposed from the countless daily beatings that she had suffered through for the past two years.

For a moment Maeve remembered back to the first beating like this that she had received at Turok's hands. It had lasted for at least an hour and had left her so weak that she was unconscious for over a day and could barely move for at least a week afterward.

Now the pain was quite dull as Turok brought the whip down on her yet again. The pain of the beating was no longer too great for Maeve to bear without losing consciousness. What bothered her was the soreness she would feel later that would force her to become a virtual invalid for several days. Several days where she would be even more vulnerable than she was at this moment, if that was even possible any more. So Maeve focused her faltering strength and slowly used the wall to pull herself into a standing position. She looked at her tormentor with defiant eyes, fighting to keep from crying out at the pain that over exerting her exhausted and injured muscles was causing.

"So, little witch, you've decided to be obedient today," Turok commented. Then he cruelly lunged forward and punched her in the stomach, forcing her to the ground once again. Maeve curled into a tight ball and clutched her stomach as an erie mist gathered in a corner of the cell and Rumina appeared.

"Daddy! I thought you said you'd never beat her unless I was here to watch!" Rumina whined.

Turok gave Maeve a swift kick in the side before answering his daughter. "Rumina, my child, there are some things that a man must do on his own," he replied cryptically. Rumina huffed in frustration and misted out of the room again after being sure to zap the red-headed captive a couple of times first.

"Well, wench, I think it's time you learned your lesson for the day," Turok said as he knelt and took a fistful of Maeve's now dull red hair in his hand.

"And what lesson would that be?" Maeve managed to ask.

"That I am your master and you will surrender to the darkness."

"Never!"

Turok yanked Maeve lifeless locks hard once before asking, "Do you realize who you're talking to, witch!? You're helpless, and yet you dare to defy me! I'm the reason that you are alive right now, Rumina would have killed you long ago if it were not for me!"

"I'm so touched," Maeve sarcastically remarked.

"Child you should be dead right now, but I am the one who has kept you alive!"

"I'd be better off dead, anyway," Maeve muttered. "You only want me for your own selfish plans, don't think I didn't already know that! You speak as if you were my savior, yet you keep me locked in this prison, with barely enough food and beatings that I wouldn't put an animal through!"

"I AM your savior, girl, you just don't know it yet."

"I know TRUTH, Turok, and that is a LIE!"

"No matter what you think you know, what you believe is what matters, and soon you will believe everything I need you to believe." With those words Turok waved one glowing hand in front of Maeve's face, a dark light enveloping her figure as she fell unconsious. "Now for phase two of my plan. Soon, my little witch, you will belong to me, and to the darkness..."
