Cloudy Skies - Part 9

Maeve tried her best to ignore the stunned faces of her friends. Actually, Sinbad looked almost as surprised as they did. Maeve handed Sinbad his child as if she was trying to convince him that it was really his. After all, Sinbad and Maeve had agreed that they weren't going to tell anyone, and now she had just announced it to all their friends and her, here's that nasty word again, her husband. Sinbad snapped out of his thoughts as he looked up and saw that Maeve was once again being backed into a corner.

"What do you mean the father is Sinbad!?" Tallan demanded, furious. "That's not possible! You are MY wife! That is MY son!"

"Well, technically, it is possible," Firouz started, "You see, two people don't actually have to be married in order to--"

"Shut up!" Tallan yelled at Firouz and then turned his attention back toward Maeve. "You little slut! I don't believe you slept with that poor excuse for a man! I should just end your miserable existence right now!" He advanced on her and again fear found its way into her eyes as she flattened her back against the wall. Then, as if a switch had been turned on, the fire came back into her eyes.

"No," she said simply. "You will never wreck my life again. I hate you! I hate what you've turned me into! I HATE YOU!!!!!" With that Maeve raised both of her hands above her head and began to chant.

"What do you think you're doing, you little witch!?" Tallan demanded, even as his face took on a more guarded expression.

Maeve did not answer as her eyes took on an unearthly glow and she continued to chant, echoing the same, monotonous words over and over again:

"You who have so injured me,
You made me blind, I could not see.
As of now I'll be set free,
I cast you out, eternally!"

Tallan recognized the spell and cringed back in fear, but it was too late. A single bolt of red energy passed back and forth between Maeve's outstretched hands a few times before shooting out and stopping about ten feet away from Tallan. There the lightning gathered and expanded in an ellipse, growing to a size only slightly larger than a man. A burst of gale force wind suddenly swept through the room, and everyone but Maeve, Sinbad, and Tallan lost their footing and fell to the ground.

"NO!!!!!" Tallan screamed as he tried to fight against the unseen force that was pulling him toward what everyone could now tell was some sort of portal. On the other side of the gateway, scenes of flames that leapt into the sky, lakes of molten lava, and innumerable of tortured beings, all writhing in agony met everyone's vision. Tallan finally lost his footing and fell to the ground, clawing at it with his fingernails in an attempt not to be pulled into what appeared to be Hell itself. "NO!!!!!" he cried for one last time before he was sucked into the portal, his pain-filled cries reverberating in everyone's ears. The last words that were heard before the portal closed were, "I'm not dead yet, witch! I'll get you for this! I'll make you suffer!!!!!"

Just as the red portal closed and Sinbad began to wonder how they were going to get back to the ship, another bolt of lightning shot out of Maeve's fingertips, but this time it was blue. Another portal began to form, but this time on the other side they saw the deck of the Nomad as if it were right there in the room.

"Go!" Maeve said. "I'll hold it as long as I can!" Sinbad gave his child to Firouz and let the others go first. Firouz and the baby, Rongar, and Doubar went through before Sinbad turned to Maeve. He was about to say something, but she collapsed from the sheer exhaustion of all the magic she had just used. He looked back tot he portal, fully expecting it to be gone, but it wasn't. It was beginning to fade, but he decided that they could still make it through, barely. Sinbad stooped down and picked up an unconscious Maeve and jumped through the portal just as it closed.
