There was a quiet moment in the storm as if the eye were directly over them. Sinbad watched as Bryn, ever vigil, moved quickly to tie down some loose lines while there was still time. Suddenly the storm had renewed strength, and Bryn was left clinging to the ropes for dear life.
Sinbad watched the scene in horror. *No!!!!!* he thought. *Not again! Not like this! Oh, Allah, it's just like with---* "MAEVE!!!!!" he screamed at the flashback. One moment Bryn was calling out his name and the next she was gone, only this time Doubar caught Sinbad before he had a chance to jump in after her.
Bryn awoke to the feeling of a cold, hard dirt floor against her face.
"About time you woke up," came a feminine voice.
Bryn searched for the owner of the voice but could see nothing. *Oh, god, I'm blind!* she thought.
"No, actually it's just rather dark in here. Guards don't believe in wasting torches on the comfort of prisoners. Give yer eyes a moment to adjust."
Bryn did as the woman asked and a few moments later she could just barely make out shadows of figures in the dark cell.
"Might I know yer name?" the woman asked.
"Bryn."
"Ah, yes. I thought the voice was familiar."
"You know me?" Bryn questioned hopefully.
"In a sense."
"Tell me, please," Bryn nearly begged.
"Let's just say that I've been watching you and leave it at that. Besides, that's a story for another time. So, Bryn, sorceress of the Nomad, tell me about yourself."
"I'm no sorceress, and how did you know that?"
"Lucky guess. Besides, you have this," she said, gesturing to Bryn's rainbow bracelet. For the first time in the dim, almost non-existent lighting Bryn noticed that the woman had a bracelet of her own.
The woman took Bryn's left hand in her own and the bracelets glowed like prisms in the dark, providing barely enough light to reveal some of the women's features to each other. Bryn couldn't help thinking that she was supposed to know this woman from somewhere, maybe she knew her or maybe it was some kind of description, she just couldn't figure it out.
"You know another with the bracelet, don't you?" the woman asked.
"Yes..... Sinbad," Bryn answered. "He'll come, he'll save us--"
"Ha! I've known your -Sinbad-" she said his name with an acid tone in her voice, "and he's not exactly famous for being there when you need him!"
Anger found its way into Bryn's voice as she asked, "Who are you to make such accusations!?"
"Call me Maeve."
