GILES IS BESIDE HIMSELF trying to find his runaway Slayer, while the rest of the Scooby Gang do their best to keep vampire activity at bay. Trying to put the events of her painful recent past behind her, Buffy escapes to L.A. where she's slinging hash as a waitress named Anne. When she discovers horders of old folks are outnumbering the street kids, and a creepy dude named Ken who lures those runaways who remain into his cultish Family Home where they'll be "cleansed," Buffy's–er, Anne's, Slayer sense begins to tingle. Buffy goes to Hell and back to find the missing kids, in the process realizing that she belongs home in Sunnydale.

WHEN BUFFY COMES HOME, no one is quite sure how to treat her. Joyce is afraid she'll run away again, and Willow and Xander are hurt that she could so easily blow off their friendship. What Buffy wants is some quality time to explain where she's been and why she left. She doesn't get a chance, however, because the gang throws her a welcome back shindig with scores of students she doesn't really know. Feeling out of place, Buffy packs her bags again, prompting her mom and friends to quickly trade their awkward politeness for honest anger. While they work out their feelings, however, a gang of zombies arrives to eat the brains of the partyers.

KAKISTOS PLANS TO RIP out the Slayer's spine, eat her heart and suck the marrow from her bones. Luckily for Buffy, she's not the Slayer he's looking for. It's a good thing too, because between her recurring Angel dreams and shrink sessions as part of her deal to be readmitted to school, she's got enough to worry about. Enter Faith–the tough-talking Slayer activated upon Kendra's death who has been on the run from Kakistos since gouging out his eye after the vampire murdered her Watcher. A free spirit, Faith and Buffy bond quickly and join forces against Kakistos. Buffy also tearfully explains that the spell to restore Angel's soul was successful, but too late.

WHEN XANDER NODS OFF during his full moon shift to guard Oz in his library cage, the teen wolf escapes and a student turns up mauled in the woods. All signs seem to point to a werewolf attack, but another suspect emerges when Buffy discovers Angel has returned with blood on his lips and a primal disposition. A daytime attack on the school psychologist clears then both, but the turn killer remains at large. Linking the victims to a new friend of Buffy's who also has an abusive boyfriend, Buffy and Willow confront her and discover that her beloved Pete isn't like other boys, and we wouldn't like him when he's angry.

CORDELIA THINKS SHE'S a lock for Homecoming Queen, but when her snooty attitude becomes too much for Buffy to stomach, the Slayer awakens her prom queen within and launches a campaign to compete with Cordy for the Sunnydale tiara. Meanwhile, Mr. Trick's Slayerfest '98 is just getting underway, attracting the top assassins from the around the world (including Lyle Gorch) to hunt Buffy and Faith. When Cordy is mistaken for a Slayer, however, she and Buffy have to forget about their rivalry and work together to make it to the dance on time...or alive.

BUFFY IS SCRAMBLING to secretly nurse Angel back to health while her mother and Giles keep her under 24-hour watch. The reins begin to loosen, however, around the same time some tainted candy sold to raise money for the school band has the adults in Sunnydale acting like kids. When the Bronze is suddenly overrun by stage-diving parents, and the Ripper and Joyce can't keep their hands off each other–which has Buffy seriously wigged–the gang discovers it's all part of a devious plan by Mr. Trick, Ethan Rayne and the Mayor to divert attention while vampires raid the maternity ward as a tribute to the sewer-dwelling, baby-eating snake demon Lurconis.

A NEW WATCHER, Gwendolyn Post, has been sent to tutor Faith and evaluate Giles, who the Council believes has become "too American." As Faith and Post bond, however, the relationship between Giles and Buffy is shattered when he learns that she's been secretly seeing Angel. The gang is furious with Buffy for harboring the vicious killer, and they stage an intervention in the library to confront her about it. A particularly agitated Xander informs Faith of Angel's whereabouts, and they immediately set off to dust him. This distraction gives Post the opportunity to show her true colors.

HEARTBROKEN AND DRUNK, Spike returns to Sunnydale for some compassion, a little mayhem, and revenge on Angel, who he blames for his split with Drusilla. He abducts Willow and Xander, demanding that the fledgling witch cast a spell to make Drusilla love him again. While out gathering ingredients, Spike runs into Buffy and Angel. The three of them are attacked by vampires dispatched by the Mayor, and after some serious dusting. Spike snaps out of his funk. He tells Buffy and Angel where they can locate their friends, but not before Oz and Cordelia have already arrived at the factory to rescue their significant others but instead find them engaged in a passionate liplock.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, when Cordelia's upset–not good. Trying to forget her cheating boyfriend and his spooky entourage, Cordy blames her troubles on the arrival of Buffy in Sunnydale. Wishing aloud that she'd never met the Slayer, Cordy's words are heard and heeded by Anya, a new girl who also happens to be the patron saint of scorned women in disguise. Cordelia is whisked away to a Sunnydale without Buffy–where the Master runs the show and the few students still alive rush home before sunset and wear drab colors to avoid vampire attention. Worst of all, Willow and Xander have become the undead minions of the Master. And Cordy's next.

AS EVERYONE ELSE prepares for Christmas, Angel is stalked by the spirits of his victims. Still angry and distrustful of the vampire, the Watcher reluctantly invites him into his home and offers to help, but Angel is overwhelmed with the guilt and flees when he sees the ghost of Jenny Calendar in the apartment. Buffy's also troubled as her dreams have become more vivid, violent and linked to Angel's. Suspecting it is the work of the Bringers, a trio of evil monks known to reanimate the dead, Giles and Buffy set off to find them and break their spell. Convinced that he's slipping closer to harming Buffy, however, Angel decides to make the next sunrise his last, and it'll take nothing short of a miracle to save him.

WHEN JOYCE AND BUFFY discover two dead children in the park, townsfolk are convinced the deaths must be occult related. When a rumor begins to circulate that witches might be to blame, Willow and her coven seem to be prime suspects–Buffy even finds a doodle by Willow of the same symbol found on the kids–but it's the ghost of the children who turn out to be the real culprits behind the madness. When the ghosts urge Joyce to avenge their deaths and hurt the people responsible, she spearheads a Salem-like witch hunt with Willow and Buffy poised to burn at the stake.

BUFFY'S DREAM COMES TRUE when she suddenly becomes a normal girl with no superpowers. Much to her dismay, that doesn't stop the monsters from coming as a former serial killer-turned-vampire kidnaps Buffy's mom. With this unexpected development, Giles reveals to Buffy that he is responsible for her lack of powers and that the vampire was for her Cruciamentum–a Slayer rite-of-passage required by the Watchers' Council where she's locked inside a house to battle a vampire as a mortal. After the vamp is dusted, so is Giles' job with the Council–they feel his relationship with the Slayer has grown much more fatherly than it is Watcherly.

IT'S A NIGHT TO REMEMBER for Xander when he decides to revamp his image with a hot new set of wheels (on loan from an uncle with too many DWIs). While the rest of the fangbusters prepare to battle the Sisterhood of Jhe, however, Xander is sent to pick up donuts–his only use in this mission. While he never makes it back with the pastries, he does manage to save the school from a knife-wielding maniac and his rowdy zombie gang, help battle a Sisterhood demon, and cap the night by having "the sex" with Faith. While Xander's wild night goes unnoticed by the rest of the gang, he proves to himself that he's far from a useless Zeppo.

THE WATCHERS COUNCIL sends a replacement for Giles in the form of persnickety Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. Neither Buffy nor Faith is thrilled by this arrival, but Wesley does prove useful in identifying two swordwielding vamps the Slayers had battled the night before. They are part of the El Eliminati, a cult of vampires who serve the demon Balthazar. Thought dead, it turns out the chubby demon is not only alive, but in need of an ancient amulet from the cemetery. An even heavier problem, however, is that Buffy is becoming seduced by Faith's wild lifestyle, and the duo are drawing attention to themselves by boldly invading vamp nests by day and partying like rock stars by night–that is, until they accidentally kill a human.

IN THE AFTERMATH of the murder of a civilian, Buffy is racked with guilt and Faith is in denial land. When Xander visits Faith to help her deal with her feelings of remorse (or lack thereof), however, she pins him down on her bed and begins to choke the life out of him until Angel's timely arrival and skill with a baseball bat prevents her from committing a second murder in as many days. Something in Faith has clearly snapped, and she has acquired a taste for killing that only Angel can comprehend. But just as Angel is making some progress with her, Wesley arrives to hand Faith over to the Watchers Council for judgment. Instead, she promptly escapes and joins forces with the Mayor.

THE MORTALITY-BOUND demon Anyanka returns to Sunnydale desperate to retrieve the lost amulet that grants her power over reality. Fooling Willow into employing her budding magical powers to open a rift into alternate Sunnydale where vampires rule, Anya plans to snatch back her prize that she left behind while granting Cordy's infamous wish. Unfortunately, the spells misses its mark and brings Willow's vamped-out evil twin to town instead of the amulet. Vampwill soon discovers that this isn't the Sunnydale she knows and loves, so she sets out to restore chaos to the town.

CLEARED BT THE COUNCIL to resume her duties, Faith secretly serves as a double agent for the Mayor's office. When the two Slayers discover a demon selling the Books of Ascension, Buffy reports the news to Giles and Wesley the next morning. Of course, by this time, Faith has already killed the demon and delivered the books to the Mayor. The Mayor's next step is an attempt to bring out Angel's dark side, but when Faith puts the moves on the vampire, he sends her packing. Not to be deterred, the Mayor cuts a deal with a mysterious warlock to rob Angel of his soul using witchcraft, but the apparent returns of Angelus leaves both sides disturbed.

WHEN BUFFY LEARNS that exposure to demon blood will infect her with an aspect of the creature, she fears taking on its nasty looks but is thrilled to discover that she's actually inherited the demon's ability to read minds. Her new talent has her friends on edge–especially the hormonally charged Xander–but Buffy has a grand time listening in on everyone's thoughts until she overhears someone in the cafeteria mentally plotting to destroy the school. Immediately placing the Scooby Gang on red alert to locate the would-be assassin, Buffy begins a descent into madness when she can no longer block out the medley of voices in her head.

THE MAYOR'S RELENTLESS drive toward Ascension Day continues as Faith is dispatched to the docks to retrieve the Box of Gavroc, an item that will be crucial for the Mayor's ascension. Back at school, Buffy ponders the possibilities of going away to college and only fighting evil while on breaks–an idea that Giles and Wesley will consider if and when they stop the Mayor's Ascension. Taking the offensive against the Mayor's plans, the gang invades city hall and snags the Mayor's special box, but they lose Willow in the process. A trade is made to save Willow, but not before she manages to tear a few pages from the Books of Ascension to prepare her friends for the final showdown.
The Prom

PROM NIGHT IS supposed to be special, but it isn't going too well for Buffy and her friends. Cordelia can't afford a prom dress because her family is newly poor, Xander is forced to accompany the newly mortal demon Anya, and Angel breaks up with Buffy over their old frustrations in sustaining a relationship. As if all this weren't bad enough, a madman has trained a pack of hellhounds to attack anyone wearing formalwear. The gang all pitches in to help Buffy find the owner of the hounds, she eliminates the threat, and joins the rest of the group at the dance, where she's voted Class Protector and is surprised by Angel's unexpected appearance in a tux. It's a night she'll never forget.
Graduation Day (Part 1)

GRADUATION DAY has finally arrived for the Scooby Gang, and Ascension Day has arrived for the Mayor. Neither occasion will go off as planned. Anya, who actually attended an Ascension 800 years prior, describes the ceremony as a demon taking pure form on earth and urges them to get out of town. To further complicate matters, Angel is hit with a poisoned arrow fired by Faith, and the only known antidote is the blood of a Slayer. Buffy knows the perfect candidate–Faith–but she'll have to find her first. When the Slayers finally do square-off in battle, however, Faith's blood is spilled, but she still manages to get away, leaving Buffy the only one left who can save Angel.
Graduation Day (Part 2)

BUFFY FLEES THE scene of her fight with Faith just as the Mayor arrives with a cadre of vampire henchmen. She returns to a quickly fading Angel and forces him to drink from her neck. After a trip to the hospital (where Faith has also been admitted and slipped into a coma), Buffy recovers quickly and instructs the gang to begin preparations for a massive battle in which every classmate will have to pitch in. The Mayor also prepares his troops for the big day with a vampire strike scheduled during a solar eclipse. The battle will be bloody and explosive, and win or lose, one thing is certain–Sunnydale will never be the same again.
