Sir,
On March 9 of this year, advance elements of Sibley's Brigade, Army of New Mexico, made contact with Union Regulars
and Volunteers in the Confederate
Territory of Arizona.
The Arizona Battalion which I had the honor to command consisted of companies from the 5th Texas Vol. Mounted Rifles,
4th Texas, 3rd Arkansas, 8th La.
and a local Arizona Militia unit. Supported by a troop of Cavalry and a three-gun Battery.
The Union Forces were elements of the 1st U.S. (Reg.), 1st New Mexico Vol., 1st Colorado Vol. and a Troop of Regular Cavalry
with a Mountain Howitzer.
In four battles over a two day span, we forced the Union forces back until a detachment of Colorado Volunteers worked their
way to our rear and came upon
our supply train which they burned, and killed all of our livestock and horses. Upon being informed
of this misfortune, we were forced to disengage and
start a retreat. The Union forces were not able to follow due to the blows we
had dealt them prior to disengaging.
Your Obt. Servant,
Bob Smith, Capt.
Arizona Battalion Commander
