The reserve is located southwest of Lakeland on US 98. Turn east on SR 540 (Winter-Lake Road) and proceed about 2 miles. The reserve is on your right. Use the second entrance where you will find a marked trail. The marsh is near marker #3.

The reserve covers almost 1,200 acres of marsh, cypress swamp and an enormous oak hammock. Thousands of wading birds, ibis, ducks,and peeps are using the Banana Creek marsh as of January 2004. There are miles of trails around the marsh and a long shoreline with Lake Hancock, home of some of the largest alligators left in Florida. It is easily the best public location in Polk County for water birds. The bird list for this property should exceed 200 species making it a must see birding location. There is no fee, but duck hunting takes place on Wednesday and Saturday during November - January, mornings only. Even during duck hunting season the reserve is open to all.
