The phantom train isn't a place to be taken lightly. It is filled with very odd and powerful monsters (i.e the balloon). Also the train cars are filled with ghosts who will either help, sell, or duke it out with you.
If you wanna be safe with choosing a friendly ghost, go to the caboose of the train where you will find a save point and a friendly ghost who will aid you in your journey.
If you wanna beat the phantom train in one hit, just throw a pheonix down his way and he'll drop you off at the corner.
