~Matchbox 20 concert experiences (continued) ~

Matchbox 20 & Paula Cole at Reunion Arena
Dallas, TX
September 24, 1998
Well, geez. My friend and I went to this show (my 4th), and I was just hoping it would be a good one. And it was! Like, the best, without a doubt. Let's see. Um. Paula Cole opened & she was really boring. She wore a long-sleeved shirt which covered up the chinchillas she has breeding in her armpits, I guess so they wouldn't fall out. I was grateful. She sang her songs and my friend and I entertained ourselves by shouting things like, "I love you Paula," (the sarcasm was obvious only to us, I imagine) and "I love Dawson," or "Go Pacey," during "I Don't Wanna Wait." So it was fun. She left after about 45 minutes - to go pray to the arm hair gods, I guess. It got dark...chilly...a cold had settled into my bones as strange looking men scrambled all over the stage. Setting up strange altars...nah, kidding - the crew set up the instruments & around 9:00 Rob and the boys walked out & they opened up with "Argue." They sang every song on the album, plus "Tired" and they did a cover of "Nothing Compares to you." For the encore, Rob came out by himself (as usual) and he had his lil guitar and he said,"Well, this is a song that you can't get anywhere, it's an old song, I wrote it a long time ago, and every word of it is true." (something to that effect - it flowed a little better than that) and I (naturally very excited seeing as how it is my favorite song by the boys and I was hoping they would sing it) jumped up and yelled, "It's Rest Stop!" like a dumbass, and everyone stared... But it was all good 'cause he started to play it and I was happy. They also did "Don't Bring Me Down," (Beatles song - whew, they rocked it out!), "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," "Fascination Street," "You and I and I," and "Long Day." Yeah! Great show! All the energy and ALL THAT MUSIC! It was wonderful. After the show my friend and I staked out where the busses were and were standing around with 40 or so other people, waiting for everyone's fave band to come prancing out. Eventually they did, Rob first, but nobody recognized him but me. All I could think to yell was this, "Is that Rob? Hi Rob," and I waved. He looked up, waved back, then everyone else freaked out. After he waved and all, he disappeared into the bus with his shiny leather pants wearing fiance and no one saw him after that. Then Brian hopped out of Reunion Arena and he didn't wave or anything, just jumped into the bus. Then Adam came out and he smooched his girlfriend a long kiss goodbye - everyone was awwwing and making catcalls - poor Adam. He went in the bus and then came out a few minutes later and motioned that he would sign autographs, so everyone took off running to where he had indicated us to run. We're all standing there and he comes over with a pen. He signed my ticket, I told him his shirt was cool (it was!) and then he said, "Thanks, you're nice." And later he told me I was cool or something (I don't know how he would know that, but hell, I'll take it like I get it!) Here's the deal. I felt so bad after i left 'cause Adam looked so DRAINED. And he had just told his girl goodbye, and I'm sure he was sad about that. I felt like a little vulture or something. I'm sure the only thing they wanted to do was disappear quietly into their busses and chill without having to please a bunch of crazies wanting their signatures. Adam was nice enough to come out and do it... But i decided that my new campaign is this: spread the word - respect! Those poor guys have been touring for 2 years! And there are just too many fans for them to get to each and everyone - take heart - they love you! But just...know when to back off. K? If I have, I'm sorry - I just think it's something that some people should consider.

 ~Expression through words~

Your deep blue eyes filled with pain, your voice so sweet and drowned in shame. Every word you say is believed, for no one knows any better. Oh, I wonder day in and day out what goes on behind those eyes without doubt. What could have possibly happened? Only you will know. You share your experience, wisdom, and woe. To all those who listen find a comforting ear. A person to go to who isn't even here. You change peoples lives without lifting a finger, only you have a power so deep. I wish I knew you, even though it is as if I already do. You know nothing of me, but I know of you. And in the end it will all be right.

 ~Your MB20 dreams. No matter how bizarre...~

I had the most awesome but weird dream about Rob. OK, here goes:
I was at a Matchbox 20 concert and it was awesome, of course. After it was over me and like, 10 girls were chasing Rob. He ran into a house so we all followed but no one could find him. So I went outside, very disappointed. There was a police guy sitting on the bench next to me, when suddenly I realized it was Rob in disguise. He asked me not to tell anyone it was him. So I didn't and we started talking. We were talking for like hours. Then I asked him for his autograph, I gave him a pen and he wrote me a two page letter! Well I was very sad because it was time for me to leave. He gave me a hug good-bye. Then we kissed 3 times and he told me how much he would miss me. We did one of those movie good-byes... The really sad ones. And then I woke up.

MISSY9717@aol.com

	I showed up at "matchbox 20's house", and Adam Duritz(from the Counting Crows) was standing outside of it and I came in to talk to Rob(ahhhhhh), and there was this fat rude mean ugly girl sittin there tryin to get on my man(Rob:P), and he was grossed out so he just looked at me and goes "Soooo...Jen....how's your day?" AAAAHAHAHA it was so funny. So Adam is sittin next to me too and Pookie was on the arm of the chair next to Adam, umm...and Paul was under the couch. Just layin there like it was normal behavior:) Ok so Adam comes in and starts yellin at the band cuz he thought he heard screaming or something and POOKIE starts to wrestle with the man! I was screamin "BITCH GOES DOWN!! PIN DA MAN POOKIE WOO HOO!!" So then we get bored and we went outside to this like Mexican party(this is where Sexy..I mean Kyle comes in:) and Kyle comes over to us with a pan on his head we were like"WHAT?!" I was like"WHATS UP WIHT EVERYONE TODAY?!WHAT ARE YOU GUYS SMOKING?!" and so then the whole band except for Rob went away and me and Rob were having an awesome time just chillin, and I had to go so I got their phone number, we all had a crying party, and I left.
	When I woke up I was so sad it like put me in a bad mood for like the the whole day. I was so sad I didnt meet them, but HAVE NO FEAR on the 14th, I finally did. Well I met Kyle and Adam and Joey(Rob Paul and Pookie were sick):*(...but it was still the best night of my life:) Write back

I had 2 dreams about the guys.......
     The first one I had was 2 nights after I saw them for the second time. I remember it so clearly...........I was in the second row of a concert and I got Adam's attention when Rob was singing "Dear Joan" cause I knew all the words and he told Rob and Rob kinda made faces at me for the rest of the night. As the show ended I hung around for awhile hoping for a chance to see them, but they never came back out so I left. And as I was walking up the stairs to leave, Rob came running and said thank you for the shirt that I threw on stage at the first concert that I went to. (Cause me and my friend made shirts with puff paints and threw them on stage) And he told me that he wore it all the time and he gave me a big hug and kissed me on the cheek. And that's the end......
     The next one is a bit odd......I was going on a field trip with my school to watch some play and the Mullins Center. And the guys were playing there that night and I had front row tickets. Anyway Rob, Joey, Kyle and Adam (I dunno where Paul and Brian were) went to watch the play my school was watching and I saw them as I was walking in and flipped out. Rob some how guessed who I was and gave me a hug and asked me to sit with him during the play and then hang around with them until later concert time......and then my stinking mother woke me up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Jamie4420@aol.com

I think matchbox 20 is like the greatest band a live, anyways I have had a couple of dreams that had to do mb20. One had to do with just Rob Thomas, see I dreamed that I was standing in line at Meijers and Rob was in front of me. I said "Hi" and introduced myself and he said thanx for being such a great fan . Then he walked out and I ran after him, and he said that he would give me his autograph if I walked back to his van (he had a van ok) and so I said "Ok". When we got there, he handed me a piece of paper and said that if I wrote him a letter and signed it he would write a letter back, so I was so busy writing the letter I didn't see him walk away, when I got done, he was gone so I tryed to find him, I ran all over and even looked in his van but he was no where in sight, when I went to go look for him in the parking lot, I saw Paul driving the van with Rob in the passenger seat, I yelled "Wait" and he looked back but Paul kept on driving and wouldn't stop, so I sat down and cried because I didn't get Rob's autograph. Ok the end, I know it sounds really stupid but when I woke up I felt sad. (Boohoo)
      Ok I have had another dream about the band, I dreamed that they were coming in concert in my garage and everybody from my school got to go see it for a field trip, my dad paid for my ticket and I was soo excited. But my dad accidently bought cheap tickets and so that meant I had to wait inside my house and wasn't allowed to go outside to see them but only listen to them inside my house. I was pissed, so I was hanging inside with all the other people who bought cheap tickets and this one guy I absolutely hate but likes me came over and said that he was supposed to be outside but his red necklace(if you were outside you had a red necklace and if you were inside my house you had a yellow necklace) broke so he couldnt go outside, he gave it to me and asked me if I could fix it and said that if I fixed it I could go outside to see mb20, I fixed it and went out, but I had to wait like 5 hours for them to actually sing, so I was waiting and I could see Rob waving to me out of the window in the garage and I was waving to him then the curtain opened and there they were, singing and doing everything they do. I was so happy because only 7 people showed up at the concert so we got like a private concert. Ok thats the end of that stupid dream, I woke up to my damn alarm clock so I only heard one of their songs :( But hey, in a way I did get a free concert I just happened to be asleep :)

Hi guys! I have a song! You might have seen this before! Anyway here it is!
(To the tune of "3AM")
- Ode To Adam's Cereal by Emps, sparklegirl & Lucy
He say's I'm feeling hungry, go get me some Honeycombs
He's always loffed cereal like that
He said I'm gonna starve and it might as well be my fault
And he only eats when it's raining
And he feeds
And his belt is straining
Chorus:
He says baby
It's 2:30 am I must be hungry
He says baby
Well I can't help but go to the Food Spot sometimes
And the milk's gonna wash it down I believe it
He's got a little bit of crunching
God it tastes like nothing
And in his colour coded pantry he believes that he's got it all
He swears the spoons don't scoop quite as much as they used to
And he only eats when it's raining
And he feeds
And his belt is belt is straining
Chorus
He believes that life is made up cereal that you're used to
And the bowl on the floor has been sitting there for days, and days
He thinks that happiness is a bowl that sits on his table
But outside, it's stopped raining
Chorus

There's a picture that goes with this song and the address for it is

Hey,
 	Sup! This is so cool! Oh my gosh Matchbox20 is playing on the radio right now! That's cool too! Anyway, Matchbox20 is the most awesome band ever! I have NEVER loved a band as much as this one. I'm starting to get a reputation in school as the overly- obsessive- Matchbox20- lover. It kicks butt! Matchbox20 has helped me completely through a bad turn down by my ultimate crush and the thing is that he totally led me on! I was crying the whole two months and all of my friends felt sorry for me and I listened to Matchbox20 and at that time I was already a big fan of them and after a while I was better and at that time I had gotten into a drinking problem at school and I'm only 12. The next day after I was caught drinking, my grandfather died and my mom said that she would never forgive me. So "Back 2 Good" was an excellent song for me. Nothing seems to go right for me. But Matchbox20 hits home! I love you guys!!!!!!!
-Ronvand@aol.com

I can't wait for the new album to come out! They're gonna start recording in April!

I was watching the show Felicity and the background music was some girl singing and she was singing "I know you have a little life in you, I know you gotta little strength left..." and I was like WAIT! I know that from somewhere! Then I realised that thats part of the extra verse of 3am! : ) I just thought that was cool... : )

 Timeline of Matchbox 20
 ================================
~Where they've been and how they got there~

Sources: "Meet the Band" from Issue 1 of the Long Day 'Zine, past issues of the LDZ
(Information expressed hear is accurate to our knowledge. Any additions or changes are totally welcome and the updated version will be on the page. Hopefully we didn't totally screw this over :)

The Band:

Adam Gaynor (rhythm guitar, vocals) - November 26, 1964
Brian Yale (bass) - November 14, 1968
Rob Thomas (lead vox, songwriter) - February 14, 1972
Paul Doucette (drums) - August 22, 1972
Kyle Cook (leadguitar, vocals) - August 29, 1975

==================== 1992 ====================

Rob Thomas, Paul Doucette, and Brian Yale get together and are in a band known as Tabitha's Secret. They disbanded but not without catching the attention of Matt Serletic (future producer).

==================== 1994 ====================

Adam Gaynor, from Criteria Recording Studios in Miami, and Kyle Cook, from the Atlanta Institute of Music, are brought into the band and the lineup is complete.

matchbox 20 wasted no time and began tracking demos with Matt Serletic. The project attracted attention and they are added to the Lava/Atlantic Records roster. They head back into the studio with Serletic to record their debut album, "Yourself or Someone Like You".

==================== 1996 ====================

Their first single 'Long Day' is released to radio and a video is made. We're unsure of the exact release date.

October 1st- 'Yourself Or Someone Like You', matchbox 20's record debut is released. Produced by Matt Serletic the track listing is as follows:
•01. Real World
•02. 3 AM
•03. Long Day
•04. Push
•05. Girl Like That
•06. Back 2 Good
•07. Damn
•08. Argue
•09. Kody
•10. Busted
•11. Shame
•12. Hang

==================== 1997 ====================

'Push', their second single, is released and a video is made. It gets massive radioplay and the video is in heavy rotation. This is what breaks mb20 into the mainstream.

June 21- The band get a spot on the largest concert since the hallowed Woodstock- Blockbuster Rockfest '97 near Dallas. They shared the stage with Bush, Verve Pipe, Third Eye Blind, Jewel, No Doubt, Paula Cole, and the Wallflowers.

July 16th- First national television broadcast ever on the Late Show with David Letterman. Performance of "Push" with the infamous falling mike.

September 4- Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Performance of "Push"

September 15- Issue #1 of the Long Day 'Zine is sent out. Ok, not a monumental moment in the band's history but it's kinda rad :)

Sunday October 19-"3AM" video premieres on 120 Minutes. The success of this single would prove matchbox 20's staying power and kill the "one-hit wonder" label.

Matchbox 20 is on the cover of the November issue of 'Maximum Guitar'.

November 13- Second appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. Great performance of their third single, "3AM".

November 15- Matchbox 20 was scheduled to be on Saturday Night Live. When Mariah Carey took their slot for reasons we still don't know, mb20 fans go spastic.

November 18, 1997- Tabitha's Secret (Rob, Paul, and Brian's old band) release "Don't Play With Matches". There's abit of friction in the matchbox camp concerning this.

December- Matchbox 20 is on the cover of Launch, a magazine in CD-ROM format. Highlights are interviews, live footage, and a live track "Real World". For back issues try Launch Online . Issue # is 16.

==================== 1998 ====================

January 22- mb20 voted "Best New Band" in the Reader's Choice in Rolling Stone Magazine. Rolling Stone Issue 778; January 22, 1998

January 26th- 1998 American Music Awards air. mb20 plays "Push" live, and are nominated for Best Pop/Rock New Artist and Best Pop/Rock Album. Go home empty-handed, losing out to the Spice Girls for both.

QUOTES:
(some favs from past issues)

"Rob has always played keyboards, but never had a music lesson. He was one of those annoying people who picked it up and said, 'Listen to this.' Then, he would write a song and play the music. Now he can play the guitar also. What a geek." ---Missy about her brother, Rob

Excerpts from the 'Music Axis' article. Issue 5
-(MA)Music Axis: What about Australia? I heard you had a good time at the zoo.
(P)Paul: Right on, I held a koala. I saw some kangaroos.
(A)Adam: I danced with the mighty wallaby.
P: Kangaroos were doing, you know, what kangaroos do. Procreation.
A: Licking themselves.
P: All over the place.
A: It was a little weird.
P: It was really odd. I’ve never really seen that before.
A: We took a lot of pictures.
....
MA: What music are you listening to on the tour?
P: Right now, I’m listening to Bic Runga , probably my favorite. Old 97’s, new Portishead, new Bjork, and constantly REM.
A: (laughing) I only listen to our record. I can’t get into other artists, I don’t like any other bands. The only reason I joined this unit was because of the music, and damn it if I’m gonna listen to anything but my own album.
(At this point Adam puts a cigarette in his mouth).
A: Get this. I’m the only one in Matchbox 20 who doesn’t smoke, but I like to have a cigarette in my mouth when I go out.

I was listening to the radio interview Paul did on 107.9 The End on October 24th and I thought some of these quotes were cute:
"I'm totally devoid of any creativity..."
"If I don't massage Rob's feet after a show I'm fired..."(jokingly!!)
"Nothing makes you feel energized like the word SPOON..."

 *We Always Say it Would be Good to Go Away*
 Good-byes
 ================================
 ~It's the end, my friends~

Well we hope you enjoyed our big One Year Anniversary Issue! We also hope that you've enjoyed the Zine over the past year. We do have a somewhat sad announcement to make though... This will be Meera and Ali's last issue. Here's a couple words from each of them...

It's been real working on this Zine, for matchbox20, and trying to give you guys all the news and information and entertainment that you want about this great band. However, it's time for me to say goodbye, and so I'm going to try and save you from all the sappiness that this may contain, but hey, I'll miss it. We've been doing the Long Day Zine for over a year now, and I can remember the very beginning, when I got an email talking about the Zine, and I loved the idea. I asked if I could help with it, and they "took me in". I haven't exactly been the biggest asset to this Zine, because Michelle, Meera and Carrie, really have put their heart and soul into the Zine each and every time. The one thing I'm going to miss most about ending the Zine, is going to be working with the 3 of the raddest people I know: Meera, Michelle and Carrie. They've been a blast to work with. I hope all of you enjoyed the Issues of the Zine that we managed to put together, and I hope you all appreciated them. It's been an experience. I wish matchbox20 and all of you much luck for their next album.
-Ali

Hey Guys! -
Well, to tell you the truth... the reason for my leaving the Zine is that I've just lost my love for matchbox20. I'm not really sure, because I know that I've been very lucky with meeting them and all, but it just happened over the summer I guess. I came back from camp and I almost didn't go to the August 17th show! Well, anyways - I still like the guys and thier music is okay, once in awhile, but I just don't like them 1/2 as much as I used to do... Anyways - its been great working with Carrie, Michelle, and Ali and I'm probably gonna miss this when I'm gone, but for now I feel this is the best decision. I don't wanna do this half-heartedly and put out something that isn't as good as it could be. Take care of yourselves and maybe I'll see ya around!
Later-
 Meera

 We're unsure on the future of the 'zine. Michelle is still going on with it and the webpage and Carrie is coming back. (yay Carrie!) It looks like we're going to look for help. If you are interested in being a permanent 'zine editor contact us. We're unsure of requirements but be willing to spend a good chunk of time on this and stick with it. Whoever is interested, e-mail us and we'll reply and somehow pick a couple people out. We're unsure exactly how it's going to work.
We've done our best to put out one of the best Zines out there over the past year and we hope you've enjoyed it. Before we go we want to thank a couple of people. We want to thank TBR, Melissa Reed, Jacque - Kyle's Mom, Mamie - Rob's Mom, and everyone else for all their help with features and everything. We also want to thank you guys for all your support! Without you guys there wouldn't be much of a zine! And lastly, we'd like to thank matchbox 20 for writing GREAT songs, putting on AMAZING shows, and just for being them. In the next Call for Contributions we'll give more details on the new editors and just how the state of the 'zine is. Till then, take care.
