Life in Alaska

This will eventually be my journal page :)
We are looking forward to skiing at Alyeska this winter. Hopefully Charles will come back for Thanksgiving again this year. They went skiing at Hilltop Ski Area. Cody also went skiing for his first time and he did really well. We would go to Alpenglow at Artic Valley but they have limited access as there is also a missle base up there. That is one place we picked berries all summer. Our freezer is full of them. We need to put the berries in the shed, that is where I have our turkey. Plenty of extra freezer space in the winter!

We really enjoy the essence of Alaska in the summers. Some of us, developed Gold Fever. We went gold panning up in the mountains...it was a lot of fun. We can feel the urge to start gold panning as soon as the snow starts to melt.

We saw wolverines and a bunch of little animals called marmots that look like ground squirrles, I fed them a peanut butter sandwhich! Shhhh...don't tell.

We went up into the mountains up by Independence Mine They were going to develop a ski resort there in Hatcher Pass. It has been decided against, with a lot of persuation from Alyeska.

It is beautiful drive through the pass, at the top it over looks Summit lake. It is very cool and refreshing. Be sure to check out this guide to Hiking in Alaska. I love to go places that seem untouched by human hands! That is why I like Alaska I guess.

We are taking advantage of the long hours of daylight again this year, going out in the evenings after work. We sometimes drive out along the Seward Highway. Out past Potter's Marsh. There are all kind of birds and water fowl there.

When the tide goes out you can see Bald Eagles out on the mud flats. The slurping mud, as some call it, can be very dangerous. So we make sure we don't venture out there. You can take a virtual tour and see what you think.

Everyone went fishing up at Bird Creek so when we could not pan for gold there, I walked up stream looking for bears and saw sooooo many fish! I have never seen so many huge fish in one place before! We did not have fishing permits last year...but we do now! Cliff has been making his own fliesfor fishing. As a matter of fact, the first fish he caught was with his own.

Then you can always go down to the beach and hunt for rocks. There are so many beautiful rocks to be found, I found some nice pieces of jade.

The winters are long and cold, but it brings all kinds of new adventures. The kids build a snow family that they maintain throughout the winter. This year they are working on a snow fort. Jeremy helps them out with by plowing a huge snow hill. Cliff enters the snow competion each year. This year Crystal was able to join in.
