Pius VI (1775-1799)

• Charitas - On the Civil Oath in France (April 13, 1791)...This Encyclical addresses the so-called "Civil Constitution of the Clergy" which had been recently passed by the French National Assembly. Pius predicts that this action would "lead the French people into error and schism." Given the subsequent events of the French Revolution, few are inclined to disagree.
