'Schwerttanz'
( "Sword Dance" )

The performance of the 'Schwerttanz' ('Sword Dance') is a pagan ritual reflecting the eternally persisting fight between the seasons Winter and Spring, Summer and Winter.

This dance is performed before the 'Georgiritt' - a horseback riding event taking place in honor of Saint Georg in Traunstein/Bavaria each Monday after Easter Sunday and begins with the "Sword Fighter's Chiming Hour". Young men-trade apprentices attired in authentic costumes carrying swords perform the "Sword Dance", a battle symbolizing the banishing of Winter to joyfully welcome Spring.

After the Sword Dance performance, riders, locals and farmers mounted on amply decorated horses, with fanfares, drums, whistles and ringing bells ride up towards the Ettendorfer Church to sound out in celebration and commemoration of this traditional annual event.
