Spina Bifida Association of America

Spina Bifida is the number one permanent disabler of newborns. The incidence of Spina Bifida is greater than that of muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, polio, and cystic fibrosis combined.

Every hour of every day, a child is born with Spina Bifida. It is a defect of the spinal column resulting from the failure of the spine to close properly during the first month of pregnancy. Spina Bifida may cause varying degrees of paralysis, loss of feeling in the lower limbs, and bowel and bladder complications. It is usually accompanied by the accumulation of fluid in the brain. This birth defect results in a lifetime of need for medical surgical interventions in the areas of neurosurgery, orthopedics, and urology. A child born with Spina Bifida may have as many as twelve surgeries before the age of six.

Recent studies have shown that between half and three quarters of cases can be prevented if women of child-bearing age consume just 0.04 milligrams of folic acid daily before conception and for the first one to three months of pregnancy.

Persons with Spina Bifida can reach their full potential by dealing realistically with their handicap, achieving independence, and integrating into the social mainstream. They do not need nor want pity.
