Chapter 11

Well…I've had detention before and it wasn't that bad
then. This time…with Mr. King, was hell.
I did tons of errands and duties for him as Cindy did
paperwork and grades in his freshman class gradebook.
He was so strict and weird…I just felt that if I said
anything or back talked him…I would never hear the
end of it.

When I got back from doing one thing for him…
I was sent to do another.

I got back from getting him some water when our
detention time was over.

"Can we go sir?" I asked impatient to leave.

"Go," he said distracted with something on his desk.

Cindy and I packed up our bookbags and ran out the
door, afraid he was going to ask us to do something
else.

"God I hate detention," I said as we got into Cindy's car.

"We ready for a dress day?" Cindy asked as she
started the car.

"Let's go!" I said as she sped off.
Our mission for today…getting the perfect dresses for
the prom.

"Has he said anything to you about that list?" Cindy
asked looking through the rack. We had been to every
store imaginable and still couldn't find me the perfect
dress.

Cindy had found hers at one of the first stores we
went to.

"No…you think that's what he was mad about?" I asked
changing in the dressing room.

"Why would he be mad about that?"

"I don't know!" I said defensively. "You never know
with guys."

"You got that right," she said throwing another
over the dressing room door. "Try this one."

"Wait! I think I've got the perfect one finally," I said
coming out.

"Oh girl…it is!" Cindy said smiling big.

I looked in the mirror and smiled. It was forest green
and went down to my ankles. A slit started from my
right thigh and went down to the end. It was
spaghetti-strap and fit…perfectly.

"Thank God! I'm getting so tired," I said closing the
door and changing back into my blue jeans and blue
tank top.

I came out holding the dress and went up to the
register.

"And you know what? I have the perfect shoes for
this dress too," I said as I handed the lady my dad's
credit card.

"Good, when can finally go home," Cindy said as the
lady handed me the dress on a hanger. I looked at all
the stores as we passed, shocked at what I saw in the
electronic store I stopped dead in my tracks.

"What are you doing?" Cindy asked.

"Nick's on t.v.!" I said pointing. He was singing
with the guys at the NBA game in Tampa.

"Wow," Cindy said as her mouth dropped too.

Any second I was ready for a fly to come in.

"That was the Backstreet Boys? Yes the Backstreet
Boys, a new group originating in Orlando," the
announcer said as we closed our mouths.

"The Backstreet Boys?" We both said laughing. That
was the name of the market near Cindy's house that
we hung out at.

Well…Backstreet was…not boys.

When we got home, it was around 9 at night,
and the guys were doing their all of a sudden daily
basketball game.

One of the guys would play Brian and try to win…
but always failed.

"Hey guys," I said getting out of Cindy's car.

"Hey J! What's the dress for?" A.J. asked as they
walked over to me.

Cindy sped off and left me alone with them.

"The prom," I said putting the heavy thing over
my shoulder.

"You know green is Nick's fave color," Brian said
winking. I rolled my eyes and sighed.

"I guess I'll have to go take it back now
won't I?" I said with a grin.

"Nah, it's real nice," Kevin said shaking his head.

"Thanks Kev. Guess who I saw on t.v. doing the
national anthem?" I said as the guys shrugged.

"Who? We were busy!" Brian said as I giggled
my airhead giggle.

"No I'm serious, you guys were really good!
Backstreet Boys huh?" I said holding in my laughter.

"Yeah…got a problem with it?" Howie said acting
macho.

"Come on I'll take you right now Dorough!" I said
laughing.

"All 5 of us will take you on Logan!" Howie said as
he came up, towering over me…well a little.

I couldn't contain my laughter of his serious face;
I laughed until my stomach hurt.

Nick was not amused.

"Hey can I talk to you A.J.?" I asked.

He was the one I talked to the most out of all of
them…other than Nick.

"WOO!" The guys yelled as A.J. followed me over to
the middle of the road.

"Sup J?" A.J. asked curiously.

"Have you found out why Nick is so mad at me?" I
asked.

I really wanted to know by this point.
Nick wouldn't even look in my direction anymore.

"All any of us know is it was something at school. But we
do know about that list! J you dog you!" He said as I
laughed embarrassed.

"Oh shove it. Ashley told me to do it…I couldn't help
the results…right?" I said as A.J. followed me to my
house.

"Between me and you…you like him?" A.J. asked as
we sat on my steps. I put the dress on the lawn and
rubbed my hand to get the circulation flowing.

"Between you and me right?" I asked. He nodded.
"I love him," I sighed.

"WOW YOU DO?!" A.J. yelled as the guys looked
over at us. I smacked his hard in the arm.

"Shut up!" I said as he rubbed his arm. We both started
laughing as he got up, I did the same.

"I'm going to go back now. You got my cell
phone number right?" He asked.

"Uh huh. Congrats on singing today," I said hugging him.

"Thanks, see ya!" He said walking away. I took the
dress into my other hand and walked inside.

"Rob J is home!" Vicki yelled from the couch.

"Sorry so late," I said trying to dodge questioning.

"Honey where's my card?" My dad asked coming from
his bedroom. I took it out of my purse and handed it
to him.

"Thank you daddy," I said hugging him. If it wasn't for
him I couldn't buy this beautiful dress, Nick's favorite
color too.

"It looks beautiful!" Vicki said popping some corn nuts
in her mouth. I nodded happily.

"It is Vicki, it really is."

"So when is it again?"

"Um…in 2 weeks," I said realizing it wasn't that far
away.

"You remember we're chaperoning huh?" Dad asked
as I nodded. In my mind I was screaming.

"Well I have a lot of homework to do," I said opening
the basement door and shutting it before they had
something else to say.

I jumped onto my bed and dialed Cindy's number.

"Hey C! I just realized the prom is in 2 weeks!"
I said opening my bookbag.

"Well duh! I worry about you sometimes," she said as
I sighed.

"Nick knows about the list, A.J. told me," I said closing
my eyes and refraining from finding my stuff.

"Really? Did Nick talk to you at…" Cindy was
interrupted by a knock at my window.

"Um C, can I call you later? Someone's knocking at my
window," I said a little bit scared.

"No problem, bye!"

"Yeah bye," I said hanging up the phone. I opened the
blinds to see 4 guys and a little boy. I jumped at first
then opened the window. "What are you guys doing
here?" I asked.

"Aaron wanted to say goodnight first off," Brian said
holding Aaron up to see me. He was too short to see.

"Goodnight Jess!" Aaron said hugging me lightly.

"Night Aaron, tell Angel I said hi!" I said as he ran
off. "Now what do you guys want?" I asked folding
my arms over my chest.

"Nick wants to challenge you to a game of one on
one," Kevin said as A.J. sighed. He knew my situation.

"Oh he does does he?" I asked looking at him
shooting the ball across the street.

"Yeah…you up to it Logan?" Howie asked as I sighed.

"Why not?" I said getting out of the window. I walked
with them over, A.J. and I stayed behind.

"J…do you know what you're doing?" He whispered.

"Not for sure, but I am good at basketball!" I whispered
as we both smiled.

Either I win and he be more pissed off cause he lost in
front of his 4 friends or I lose and he makes fun of me
forever…

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

All the guys were so tired of watching us play, they left
by 2 in the morning. We were still going, I had 54 and
he had 60.

We only said a few words to each other as we played,
and I was about to pass out. I held the ball in my hand.

"Can we take a brake?" I asked pleading.

"Can't take the heat?" He asked as I threw the ball hard
to him.

"No…I can't," I said sitting down on the driveway.

I was covered in sweat and so tired I could lay down
right then and there and sleep forever.

"Truthfully, I'm glad you said something…want some
water?" He asked breathing heavily.

"No that's okay, I just need a break for a
few minutes," I said sighing.

"Okay," he said sitting down next to me.
He played with the ball as we sat in silence.

"How come you've been so mad lately?" I asked. I
wanted to know, and this was to me…the time.

"Nothing, just some stuff at school," he said wiping the
sweat off his forehead.

"I know that you know about the list," I said shyly.

"Yeah. It's okay though, I know you really didn't make
that," he said as we looked at each other. His blue eyes
were so beautiful with the shining of the moon.

"No," I said as he came closer to me.

"No," he repeated as we came in closer.

As we came in closer and closer…

"Jess?" I heard from Nick's house. Nick and I
jumped up to our feet as I looked around to see who it
was. It was Aaron! "Nick can you guys stop playing? I
can't sleep," he said rubbing his eyes.

"Yeah no problem buddy, now go to sleep before
mom catches you out here!" Nick said as Aaron ran
inside.

Nick turned back to me as I sighed.

"I'll see you tomorrow?" I asked shyly.

"Oh…yeah okay," he said nodding. I waved and
walked away sighing.

"I was this close!" I said smacking myself.
