Kayla sat down on the table to think, “I don’t know if my career will be able to stand this.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll be fine, I can handle a kid now. But I just released a statement that I was going on vacation for a year and that I’d be back.”
“From the way it looks, you’ll be a little longer than a year. Does A.J. know that you came in today?”
“No, A.J. and I aren’t even dating anymore.”
“Oh.”
“You’re ‘oh’ –ing like it’s a bad thing.”
“Will the baby have a father?”
“Of course. I can’t let my baby grow up without a father, I loved mine more than anything.”
“So when are you going to tell A.J.?”
“Marcy, I don’t think it’s A.J.’s.”
“What?”
“After A.J. and I broke up, Kevin and I kind of spent the night together.”
“Kayla, you have to tell them both. You don’t know who’s it is.”
“You don’t understand, A.J. doesn’t know that Kevin and I slept together.”
“You’re in a bind.”
“Tell me about it.”
“Listen, I’ve got another appointment soon, but call me and we’ll talk, it’s been a while.”
“Okay, thanks Marcy, I’ll see you around. Do me a favor, don’t tell anyone that I’m pregnant, I want to keep it out of the media for as long as possible.”
“I won’t, it would be breaking the doctor/patient confidentiality agreement.”
“Thank you Marcy.”
“It’s no problem. I’ll see you around.”
Kayla started to go home, but didn’t feel like facing Kevin, who was sure to be waiting for her. She went instead, to Sarah’s hotel.
“Kayla, what are you doing here so early?”
“It’s not that early Sarah, it’s 10:30.”
“Oh. Well, do you want to come in?”
“What’s wrong? You look like death warmed over.”
“Thanks a lot. Do you remember what I told you last night about Kevin?”
“Yeah…”
“After you left last night, I danced with Jeff Timmons for a while and then I ended up tossing my dinner in the ladies’ room. This morning when Kevin came to see me, he woke me up telling me that I looked like shit and then I threw up again.”
“If you’ve got the flu, please stay away from me,” she said laughing.
“I wish it were that simple. Sarah, I’m pregnant.”
Sarah quit laughing immediately, “You’re what?”
“Pregnant.”
“That’s what I thought you said. Does Kevin know?”
“That’s the thing, I don’t know if it’s Kevin’s or if it’s A.J.’s.”
“You’re in trouble.”
“You’re telling me.”
“I don’t know what to tell you honey. You need to tell them and try and find out who’s the father.”
“Marcy said that I’m three weeks pregnant. That’s about the time that A.J. and I broke up, but Kevin and I made love shortly after that. So I have no clue who the father is. I knew that we wouldn’t be able to forget that night. What was I thinking?”
“More than likely, you weren’t. When you get caught up in the moment, you don’t want to think about anything but what feels right.”
“That’s the thing, it didn’t exactly feel right. It was both weird and wonderful. He’s one of my best friends Sarah, I don’t know why we did it, but we did.”
“And now you’ve got to deal with the consequences.”
“I don’t know if I’m ready for a kid though.”
“It’s your choice Kay, but I don’t believe in abortion.”
“Good God no! That’s so not what I meant. I am so severely anti-abortion.”
“So why are you here?”
“Because I don’t know what to do. Should I tell A.J. and Kevin and break A.J.’s heart, or should I fade away and never see them again?”
“That’s not possible, you know that your jobs will eventually lead you to see each other again, and the media will be all over it when you have it.”
“There are so many things to think about. Maybe I should just leave early so I can figure all this out.”
“Like I said, it’s up to you. Whatever you decide, I’m behind you all the way and I’ll be here if you need me for anything.”
“Thank you Sarah, you’re awesome.”
Sarah pulled Kayla into a hug, “Call me, okay?”
“I will. See you later Sarah.”
Kayla left Sarah’s hotel and started on her way home. When she pulled up to her house, she noticed that A.J.’s car was sitting next to Kevin’s.
“Just great,” she thought, “I get to tell both of them at the same time. Maybe I can find a way to tell Kevin first so we can think of a way to tell A.J.”
She walked inside the house and found the men sitting in the living room, talking.
“Kayla, are you okay?” A.J. asked.
“I’m fine. Kevin, can I talk to you privately?”
“Sure, we’ll be right back A.J.”
Kayla took Kevin to her room, “Kevin, there’s something I’ve got to tell you. You need to sit down first.”
“What’s wrong Kayla?”
“I’m pregnant.”
Kevin sat down, “You are?”
“Yeah”
“So…?”
“I don’t exactly know…” she let herself trail off.
“You don’t know what?”
“I don’t know if you’re the father or if A.J. is.”
“How far along are you?”
“Three weeks.”
“That’s about how long ago we slept together.”
“I know, but A.J. and I had slept together not too long before we broke up. Three days after A.J. and I broke up, you and I slept together. So I’m really confused and I don’t know how to tell him.”
“You’ve got to be honest with him.”
She let out a sigh, “I know that I have to, but I’m not sure how.”
Kevin looked at her in the eyes, “Kayla, you’ve got to. I’d be so much more than happy if it’s my baby, but there is that possibility that it’s A.J.’s and you’ve got to find out. But no matter what happens, I’m here for you.”
Kayla smiled, “Thanks Kevin. I expected a little more drama or something.”
Kevin smiled, “It hasn’t hit me yet. Just wait.”
“I will. But until then, help me think of a way to 1: tell A.J. that I’m pregnant and 2: that it might be yours.”
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to do that. I mean, A.J. is my best friend but so are you.”
“Kevin, if it is yours, what are we gonna do?”
“I don’t know. We’ll think of something. Until we find out, we need to tell A.J. what’s going on.”
Kayla took Kevin’s hand and led him into the living room where A.J. was waiting patiently.
“A.J., there’s something that we need to tell you. It’s going to be hard to accept, but there’s more to it.”
“What’s up ya'll?”
Kevin sat in the chair across from A.J. and Kayla sat on the floor in front of him. Kayla spoke first.
“A.J., you know that what we had meant a lot to me,” she said and took a deep breath, “But we needed time apart.”
A.J. broke in then, “Kayla, are you saying that you’re with someone else now?”
She looked down at the ground, then up to Kevin, and then back to A.J., “Not exactly.”
“What do you mean ‘not exactly’?”
“One night, Kevin and I-“
“You fucked Kevin?”
“A.J., don’t be like that. You and I are broken up and I’m free to date anyone I want to.”
“So you’re dating my best friend?”
“We’re not dating A.J.”
“So you did fuck him?”
Kevin looked at Kayla, then at A.J., “Yes, we slept together.”
Rage boiled behind A.J.’s eyes, “When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“We broke up three and a half weeks ago Kayla. You’re telling me that you didn’t even wait a week before you hopped into bed with my best friend?”
“A.J., it just happened.”
“It just happened…” A.J. said, trying to let it sink in, “It just happened,” he repeated.
“A.J., there’s more,” Kevin said.
“What could be worse?”
“You should tell him Kayla.”
“A.J., I’m pregnant.”
“Is it mine?”
“I don’t know.”
A.J. took this in slowly. Trying to control his temper by breathing slowly and calmly, he tried desperately to understand what was going on, “So you’re telling me that you’re pregnant and you’re not sure whether or not the child is mine or if it’s my best friends'?”
“Yeah,” she said pitifully.
“What are you wanting me to do now?”
“I want to know who’s the father. But I don’t know what to do.”
“About what?”
“About this,” she said, pointing to her stomach, Kevin and A.J.
“I don’t either, but I can’t be here right now. I’ll call you when I cool off.”
A.J. got up and nearly ran out of the house. They could hear his car start up and his tires screaming against the pavement as he sped off.
