Chapter 4
...that's what she said.

It's thirty minutes past seven and Kathy's sitting in front of the TV that's turned on for hours and still ticking. She's watching the VCD Nick gave her. She can't bother doing something else while past events pass by her mind within those hours.

If that guy's and idiot, he'll not take time out to visit me here and give me this cool thing that I'm watching now ... But still, he's a major yuck! he's such a blonde that croons in performances! ... But hey, a date with him could hurt David's ego and that's great! I finally knew how to wake him up and change his lifestyle! ... What if David decided to broke up with me and loose my clients recommended by him --- not these days that Phisix continually drops ...oh, shit! I have to ask Gene about this ...Maybe Gene's not yet here.

Kathy then thought of calling few of her office mates - Megan and Sam.

She jumped off the couch and jerked to the phone that's beside the computer. She lifted the handset and started dialing Megan's number.

"Hello, Meg?"

"Who's this?"

"It's me, Kathy"

"Kathy? Hey! What's up! I thought you've lost my number! You haven't been calling me for ages!"

"Meg, we see each other almost everyday"

"Oh, whatever! Say I heard last night's a cinch!"

"Well, not really! I just watched crooning men"

"Duh! Admit it, girl! I heard one of them just danced with you, so probably ... just give me details!" Meg giggled at the end of the line

"Sheez, Meg! It was just a swing and it was Nick and he's ..."

"Blonde. Ok, fine" Meg's voice just mellowed down as if she lost excitement - it just made Kathy felt that her hopes of solving her problem in a blur

"Tell you what, Meg, I'm sorry to cut you short here ... I still have to cook for dinner so I'll just call you some other time, ok?" Kathy excused

It wasn't okay for Meg but Kathy hang up anyway, ignoring Meg's plea.

Kathy held the handset for a while and browsed for Samantha's number in her organizer. As soon as she saw it, she then lifted up the hand set again.

"This Samantha Cortez. I'm sorry I can't attend to you right now so just leave your name, phone number and your message after the tone. I promise to call you back as soon as possible. Thanks." Sam's machine answered and after a few while beeped for Dana's turn to speak.

"Ah, Sam? It's me, Kathy. It's nothing important. It's just that I have this suitor and I think you're the expert for this and..."

She was cut short as she heard the handset in the other end of the line shook

"Kathy? What suitor?"

"Hey, you're there Sam!"

"Well, I'm just avoiding a few other callers but for sure, I'm not avoiding yours"

"Yeah right!"

"So, what about that suitor thing? Is he cute or he's ..."

"Ah, Sam, may I remind you that I am still committed to David"

"You told me that your relationship with him is getting yucky right? Entertain him! He'd be an investment."

"But David is also an investment. He's a nice guy"

"Kathy, remember that not all investments are good? In due time, you'll have to let him go and buy this new investment that came out recently, right?"

"But I don't like this new investment's reputation!"

"Reputation doesn't matter. As long as the other fundamental data is clean, go for it. That's why you have to entertain him still. So that you'll the fundamentals of his life"

I got a feeling that I did something wrong! Kathy thought and sighed ...

...and continued "But I already busted the guy!

"You ..." Sam was just about to say more things but commotion can be heard from the background, "Sorry, Kathy. My husband just came. Maybe we'll talk this over in the office"

"It's ok, Sam, bye"

Kathy sighed once more and her eyes focuses to the computer set.

Sorry to disturb you Gene, but I am disturbed by this, too.

14th of February, and it's ten minutes after two o'clock p.m. and the Backstreet are having a share of relaxation in their suite's living room by just simply reading few of fan mails that they received sent in through their security. Howie went down to the hotel lobby to meet the fans that has visited the hotel just for them. AJ are making few phone calls to his folks in the US.

"Bri, this is yours" quipped Kevin as he threw an envelope which contain a card. It fell on the floor so Brian took a glimpse on the envelope

"It's yours, Kevin. Can't you read it?" Brian commented after noticing Kevin's name in big neon prints

"Read it again" Kevin suggested while opening another envelope.

Brian this time picked up the envelope and loudly said "See, it says K-e-v-i-n ...apostrophe S ... cousin"

Kevin cackled like crazy at Brian's mistake as Brian was also laughing at himself. Then the cousins stopped and felt a little eerie on the living room. Something was lacking.

Nick wasn't laughing as if he has his own world on a chair next to the window reading his letters.

"Hey, Frac! You look gloomy" Brian said to Nick as he hunkered beside Nick in a chair at their room, "You've been gloomy for two days"

"I'm not that gloomy. I mean, the fans didn't notice it and all I hear around are complements, right?" Nick responded

"So what if people ain't noticing these things? You're not comfortable with it! Come on, buddy! I see it because I know you. You've grown to become a cool dude and you should be strong handling women," Brian said and then gave a soft punch on Nick's right arm, "Come on, man! Be cool! 'B-rok'!"

"Very funny, Fric!" Nick said to Brian as he shows off a Jim Carrey grin.

The door then knocked five times and the security from the outside opened the door for Mr. Pearlman. He entered the door and take a look of the whole room before speaking

"Where's Howie?" Mr. Pearlman asked Kevin who's seated at the floor holding a letter

"He's downstairs, in the lobby. He's still talking with the fans" Kevin responded, "What's up, Big Pop?"

"Well, it's nearly 2:30. I suggest that we leave this place early. Some local artists are performing downstairs. I don't want hassles with crowd control in this hotel. Start preparing, ok? Did you hear me out there, AJ?"

"Got it!" AJ said then eventually hung the phone

Mr. Pearlman then left the room and ordered that Howie be called from downstairs through the security

AJ, Brian, Kevin and Nick then stood up and start preparing for the things they would need for their show. Howie, after fifteen minutes, came in the room after --- when everybody's already set except Nick who was just about to wear his rubber shoes.

"It's good that you came this early! We were expecting this, sweet D.!" AJ joked while he was on his way to the door

"Well, actually, it's our turn to meet the fans while you're getting ready" Brian added who was just picking a bar of Snickers from the refrigerator.

Howie raised both his brows, "Am I the only one left?"

"Hey Howie ..." Kevin paused and went his way to the door too "... what's new?"

"Mighty har har, Kevin, mighty har har" Howie said and hurried to the only neat part of the bedroom --- that was his part of the room.

"Come on, Howie, don't be that disappointed because you filled in the gaps for us from the ... fan's needs!" Brian said putting his hands on the chest and a childlike expression on his face.

Brian skipped his way to the door and as he pulled the door knob to close the door, he then turned his head to Nick who seem to just sit down on the couch and laying down his laptop computer on his lap, "Coming, Frac?"

"I'll just wait for Howie. Go ahead," Nick said as he opened up his laptop and started connecting wires to his cell phone and to the laptop.

He recognized Brian was still standing by the door. He then raised his head to Brian "You know, just chill down in here for a while."

"But you've been chillin' there for ... oh well, fine," Brian sighed as he thought that would satisfy the emotional Nick - checking e-mails

"Try again your luck. Just do things quickly, ok? Fans are probably waiting for you" He continued and after a while he closed the door

Nick went on to what he was doing.

He logged in to get e-mail and then checked for the new mails.

"Nick! What did Brian meant when he said 'try your luck?' What are you doing?" Howie asked as he unzipped his blue back pack and threw in everything that's in his pile that he used the past night

"Well, I am checking ... again ... if Dana already ..." Nick paused staring at the list of new mails shown in the computer monitor, "...there is a God!"

Howie ran to see what was Nick telling about, carrying his bag and zipping it at the same time

"What? Did she said sorry?"

"Wait, man! I haven't read it yet!"

"How about reading that some other time?" Mr. Pearlman intruded in the excitement of the two on the mail, "We have to go now, guys. Crowd is piling downstairs"

This time, they're on their coaster bus, AJ and Kevin sat near the back, opened the curtain and wave their hands for the fans to have a sneak peak of them. Howie, Brian and Nick sat together in the middle part of the bus also have their curtain opened but it's only Nick who's waving.

Howie and Brian were just separated by the aisle but their eyes were in the same direction --- not towards the screaming crowd but to Nick's laptop opened again and this time, the mail is already being read ahead of Nick.

Brian had it on his lap as he was seated beside Nick and Howie extended his neck across the aisle so as his eyes can reach the monitor.

"Well, Frac, all I can say is go for it. This is your second chance and I guess this will make your stay in Manila worthwhile" Brian commented

"Why? What did she said?" Nick said with his smile stuck in his face as he was still waving outside

"Quit gaining fan points and read this, ok!?! This one's juicy." Brian said to Nick and he stood and went to the seats behind the two and opened the curtain, "Now, you can close your curtain, Nick. I'll take over for you"

"Me too." seconded Howie and brought down the computer as he stood up and went to Brian's window and start waving.

Nick gave a flying kiss to a fan who's screaming his name and slowly closed the curtain. He quickly then took the laptop and put it in his lap and read the mail that goes:

Gene, Yes, I know. I shouldn't disturb you by adding up my name in the list of your mails because we will soon meet but I need an outlet for me to say these things today, Valentine's Day. Guess what? I screwed up yesterday with making one soul upset! How did it happened? Really complicated. Last Friday, (was I able to tell you these?), I went to a party David's disco sponsored. It was meant for the boy group Backstreet Boys as some sort of limited engagement welcome party for them. It was not that fun plus one of the member of this boy group, named Nick danced swing with me. So fine, he sounded nice but still, he's a blonde so I didn't give much notice to him. But the thing there is that he gave a special attention to me. I knew because yesterday, when I woke up and checked the messages in the answering machine, he said to my cousin that he can't sleep because of me --- freaky, isn't it? And the next thing I knew is that he arrived with Franco and gave me a really cool VCD and somehow, when he talked with me, he affirmed that he likes me. Well, I don't like him. I mean, he's blonde and he's a fool to be attracted to me by just those few minutes of dancing with me. So, I just told him that his ambition with me will go nowhere and he just have to step out of my life. But after I did, conscience just knocked me hard until now because I didn't gave him a chance. I just can't believe that my conscience will knock me though I am committed. What's going on, Gene? Please tell me what's going on with me. Well, anyway, I won't expect a mail from you now because I know you're busy and we'll meet tomorrow. I suggest we meet in T.G.I. Friday's in Makati at 12:30 p.m. for lunch. They serve heavy meals. Bring a back pack with your laptop in it and I'll be sitting in the innermost part of the place with a backpack, too, filled with pins of different flags. I'll wait for you until 1:00 and if you're not yet there, well, that means I'll just wait for a mail from you.

Dana

Nick looked up into the ceiling and shouted "I can't believe the date tomorrow's pushing through. I mean, how can I just face her if what she sees in Nick Carter, the performer, is freaky, foolish and... and-and..."

"Blondie." Brian concluded Nick's words and Nick just slammed the laptop to close it.

"Hey, buddy Kaos! What's going on there? Did she said that you're the cutest creation already?" AJ shouted to Nick but still waving to the fans

Howie stood in the aisle and shouted his way to respond to AJ "Kathy just asked a word of advice from him on what to do ...with him"

"No, no, let me add the biggest thing that's she wants to happen" Nick said and stood up so that he can see AJ and Kevin on the back, "Kathy INVITED me over for lunch tomorrow to ask a word of advice from me on what to do ... with me"

"I told him to go for it. It will ease out every worry that he has now" Brian said to AJ

"No way man! You're humiliating the guy! Can't you see the babe just don't like Nick, the performer, 'cause he's blonde!?! At least the one in the e-mail doesn't have even a strand of hair for that babe to judge! I suggest we do it for him" AJ told Brian but this time walking away from the window as the places they're passing by now is not that crowded already

"Don't call her babe, Bone!" Nick said thrust a finger at AJ. AJ just raised his hands low in surrender to Nick's threat

Kevin dabbed on AJ to stop the commotion "Brian's right, AJ. As soon as he admit it himself, that Gene in the e-mail is the Nick that is a member of the Backstreet, that will soon end the tension in himself --- whether the result is positive or ...negative."

"Yep, Kev's right." Howie intruded

"But I think it'll be negative" AJ added

"Hey, quit that AJ! You're discouraging Nick" Brian said to AJ then he turned his head to Nick who slowly sat down, opened the laptop again, took a diskette from his bag and saved Kathy's mail on the disk.

Brian went near and squat beside Nick and whispered, "So, how's it gonna be, Frac? Are you going to meet her lunch tomorrow?"

"Well, I think so. For maybe the last time, I have to see her myself. No matter what happens. Even if it means that this will be her last mail for me," Nick said matching up with Brian's volume of voice.

Brian stood up and gave his brotherly tap on the shoulder to Nick. He turned his head to Kevin and nodded it. Then, Brian take a look at Howie and AJ and gave a grin and said, "It's Operation Dating, guys!"
