Chapter 8

The first thing I thought when I woke up the next day was that I hated my life. I felt extremly sorry for myself for having to drag my bones over to a greasepit like Mickey D's. I could hear bacon sizzling from the kitchen. I didn't have the heart to tell Brian that the last thing I felt like filling my face with was fattening bacon.

"Just in time for breakfast!" he said in a sing-song voice.

I wondered if this is what it would be like to be married to him.

"How many pieces of bacon do you want?"

I was Mrs. Brian Littrell, and Brian was cooking breakfast for me because I wasn't feeling well--being so far into the pregnancy and all--

I must have gotten caught up in my fantasy because Brian was giving me a strange look.

"I didn't think that bacon could be such a contemplative subject!"

I felt the scarlet color travel up my face, "Brian, my stomach doesn't feel great," I lied. "I think I'll skip breakfast."

I jumped up from the table and made my way over to the bathroom, stumbling over Nick's diving gear in the process. I angrily kicked at the rubber equipment. As I passes Nick and Brian's tiny bedroom I caught a glimpse of Nick still burrowed under the covers. His blonde touseled hair was the only visible part of his form not under the blankets. It made me angry that he got to stay up late and play Nintendo, and then sleep all morning.

I couldn't resist--if I had to be up then so did he--after it was his fault that I had to work at McDonald's. Besides he looked so cute. In a split second I had covered the distance between me and Nick (a whopping twelve feet)and had landed smack in the middle of his back.

"Shit! What the hell?" Nick screamed, his voice cracking when he stumbled over the word "hell."

"Morning honey!" I sang, bouncing on the bed.

"Stop it!" he growled.

"Get up and make me breakfast..." I teased. I continued to bounce on the bed. I was on a roll now...I had managed to gain momentum, and Nick was now bouncing a little.

"Five little monkeys jumpin' on the bed...one fell off and bumped his head. Four little monkeys jumpin' on the bed--oh SHIT!"

NICK fell off and bumped HIS head.

I cautiously peeked over the side of the bed at Nick's crumpled form.

Uh oh...I was in for it. Before I could break for safety Nick had already grabbed my leg. He pulled me onto the floor. After he had me pinned, he stood up and threw me over his shoulders. I pounded on his back in a vain effort to stop him. It was way too late to protest. When I realized that Nick was bringing me into the bathroom I screamed. He promptly set me into the bathtub, shut the curtain and turned the water on...the COLD water. Any attempt of eascape was useless, as he had me trapped.

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways!" he sang out. "one one thousand, two one thousand..."

"Dammit!" Brian cursed as he hung up the phone later that morning. Nick and I had already headed off to work. He had just gotten off of the phone with Jive Records, they had decided to postpone the recording session "until further notice." Evidently this new group "My brothers and I" was quite the sensational harmonizing trio. "What kind of name is 'My Brothers and I' anyway?" Brian muttered under his breath. Brian wanted to know what made this group so special. And he was going to find out why Jive Records seemed to be slowly backing out of the contract. There must be some law that prohibits what they're doing, he thought. He was going to get to the bottom of this. He ran his hands through his dirty blonde hair and sighed. He didn't know how long any of them were going to last living like here.
