“Get her off of me,” he squealed in pain.
“Okay, let’s do this,” Amy said grabbing a pair of gloves out of the first aid kit.
Nick put his hand over hers. “She’s my cousin. I should.”
Amy smiled at him and handed him the gloves. “Here you go Dr. Carter. Nurse Smith will be at your service if you need her.”
Nick nodded and smiled. “Thank you.”
“This is all very touching,” Becky interrupted bitterly, “But will you stop the chit-chat and get this baby out!”
“We’re coming,” Amy assured her as she picked up the video camera.
Nick shook his head. “Only you would think of the video camera at a time like this...”
“I’m sure her husband feels bad enough that he can’t be here,” she pointed out, “Besides, it has a light so you can see better.”
Nick passed her the cell phone and got in position. “Tell me what they say to do.”
Amy took the cell phone and cradled it to her ear “Hi.... No, he’s doing it... They said to see if she’s crowning, which is when you can see the head...”
Nick looked and his eyes bulged out. “Oh God... I can’t do this.. Amy, please, I’m begging you...” he pleaded.
“Well you make up your damn minds already!” Becky exclaimed.
Amy sighed. “At least you tried... Move over,” she ordered as she grabbed a pair of gloves from the first aid kit.
Nick and Amy switched positions and Amy looked. “Oh God...” she murmured, “Okay I can do this.. Yeah, she’s crowning.”
“Yeah, she’s crowning,” Nick repeated of the phone, “They said for Becky to push and when she does to carefully massage the head gently and support it as it comes out. And make sure the head it faced up.”
Amy nodded. “Okay Becky, push whenever your ready.”
“Oh God,” she moaned, “I don’t know if I can do this...”
Amy gave her a sympathetic smile. “Neither do I, but I don’t think we have much of a choice.”
“Don’t worry,” Nick added, “We’re all here with you every step of the way.” “You can do it,” Angel agreed encouragingly, “Just squeeze my hand as hard as it hurts.”
“Me too,” Aaron added.
“Uh, guys,” Nick began, “Nevermind...”
“Ready?” Amy asked her.
Becky nodded terrified. “I hope so..”
“On the count of three.... One.. Two.. Three,” with that said Becky started pushing as hard as she could and screaming in enormous pain. Both Aaron and Angel had looks of agony on their face.
“That’s a lot of pain!” Angel exclaimed.
“The head’s coming out. It’s faced up,” Amy stated as she started doing what Nick had told her. Nick was pointing the camera to the action, but he couldn’t bear to look.
Finally, he couldn’t help but peak. “Oh my God!” he exclaimed, “Becky, how are you doing this?!”
“Shut up, Nick!” she shot back through the pain.
“The head’s completely out,” Amy said.
“They said to support the head and the rest should slide out easily,” Nick dictated.
Amy did as she was told as Nick watched in awe. “Oh my God.. This is amazing,” he stated.
“I know,” Amy agreed in amazement, “It’s a girl!”
“Really?” Becky squealed through the pain.
Amy nodded and smiled. “Really.”
Just as the feet were coming out the baby started crying. “The baby’s crying,” Amy stated scared, “What do we do? What does that mean?”
Nick repeated that to the doctor on the phone. He smiled. “It means she’s alive.”
Just then the baby was born. Becky gave a huge sigh of relief and let go of Aaron and Angel’s hands. The twins just stared at their hand awe.
Amy stared at the little person in her arms in amazement. It was an incredible feeling. She had just helped bring a life into this world.
Nick couldn’t believe his eyes. “She’s so tiny...” he mumbled..
Amy nodded. “I know...”
Nick sat beside her on the bed, not able to move his eyes from this little person.
Finally he shifted his gaze to Amy and smiled at her “You did it.”
Amy looked at Nick and shook her head. “No, we did it.”
As exhausted as everyone was no one went back to sleep. After Amy delivered the placenta they all stayed around Becky’s bed taking turns holding the beautiful baby wrapped in what was once Angel’s blanky. Becky’s husband, Jim, was on the cell phone with them as he waited for the storm to clear up so he could get a flight there.
The baby had bright blue eyes and a couple of blonde strands on her head. “You guys were great through it all,” Becky told Nick and Amy, “Thank you so much.”
“It was worth it,” Nick replied stroking the baby’s cheek, whom Amy was holding.
“She has your mouth,” Angel told Jim.
“And Becky’s eyes,” Aaron added.
“What are you going to name her?” Angel asked.
“Actually we haven’t decided... We couldn’t agree on one,” Becky told them as she took the phone from Angel.
“How about Amy?” Nick suggested, “She was the heroine in this whole thing.”
Amy looked at Nick shocked. “Oh no.. That’s okay..” she began
“Amy...” Becky repeated thoughtfully, “We never thought of Amy... Jim likes Amy... So do I...”
“Really?” Amy squealed.
“It’s the least we could do. If it weren’t for you who knows what would have happened,” Becky pointed out, “Besides, it’s a beautiful name... Amy Westcher.”
“I like it,” Angel commented with a smile.
“Me too,” Aaron agreed.
Nick smiled at Amy. “Me too.”
“Thank you,” Amy replied beaming.
“Wait, what about the middle name?” Aaron asked.
“This is too much!” Becky replied with a smile, “I don’t know...”
Amy looked over at Nick and smiled. “How about Nikki?” she suggested as Nick looked over at her surprised, “That way you’ll never forget the other hero.. I know I couldn’t have done it with out him.”
“Oh please...” Nick trailed off modestly.
“Amy Nikki Westcher,” Becky said to her husband, “I like it. A reminder of our two heroes.”
“Looks like we have a whole name!” Aaron exclaimed, “I like it!”
“Me too!” Angel agreed, “Next baby you have, you have to name after me and Aaron.”
Becky laughed. “Okay,” she replied as Amy handed her the baby, “A name that represents miracles and team work... To deliver this baby a miracle happened, Nick and Amy learned to work together and get along.”
Amy and Nick chuckled. “It is a miracle, isn’t it?” she said.
“I’ll say,” Nick agreed.
Becky stared at her new baby. “Well, Amy Nikki Westcher, welcome to the world.”
