B. Kelso sent me this info and some of his comments: - The main character of Dream On was Martin Tupper, an ordinary book publisher. His ex-wife, Judith, re-married to a world-famous philanthropist of sorts.
The contrast between he and Martin is played up for all of its comedic,inferiority-complex-inducing effect.
In this episode, a movie is being made which tells the story of Judith's new husband (can't remember his name). Martin and Judith get to watch, on set, as other people play them. Martin ends up having a brief affair with the woman who plays Judith, and the comparisons between art and real life are inevitable. Well, anyway, the DIRECTOR of this fictional film is played by - Bowie. The character is a complete asshole !!! Bowie does a fantastic job -very, very funny. You really should probably see it if at all possible.
Ryan Spencer - His portrayal of Sir Roland as the movie director was nothing less
than brilliant!
Judith's new husband's name was Richard Stone ("The Richard Stone story").
Some of the quotes we remember are in the 1st episode when Bowie is first introduced to Martin & Judith (thinking they are the actors). He says to Judith "This blouse is a disease..." and "...makes you wonder whether the
woman has a vagina, or a snappurse!!"
Bowie gave Tom Berenger (playing Richard Stone, although his name in the
show was Nick Spencer - very confusing!)) a dinner speech saying (very
dryly) "Well, Nick joins us after adding the Olivier award...to his already
overstuffed trophy cabinet. What can we say Nick, a truly outstanding
achievement when one considers he began his career....with his pants round
his knees in light classics such as SATURDAY NIGHT BEAVER!!"
There are loads other quotes we know.
I haven't seen this HBO special (I was living in the UK then) but if you have, please send in some details, your reviews/comments, etc.: -
